Meta has released its Semiannual Adversarial Threat Report for the Second and Third Quarters of 2025, highlighting the rise in global online scams, influence operations, and AI-related violations. The report reveals actions against Cambodian criminal networks impersonating officials to deceive individuals across the Asia-Pacific region. Over 6,400 items, including accounts and content, were removed between January and October 2025 in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The report outlines the increased complexity of scam networks using encrypted apps and alternative payment methods, with stolen identities making scams more credible. This is evident in Australia, Singapore, and India, where impersonation and investment scams are prevalent. Scammers are employing AI to create deepfake videos and multilingual scams, enhancing both their efforts and Meta’s response.

Meta has responded with advanced detection systems, interaction alerts, and AI safeguards like Llama Firewall. Regional efforts include collaborations with Singapore Police and other law enforcement, leading to significant arrests related to scam networks. Meta's facial recognition program, involving nearly 500,000 public figures, aims to reduce impersonation scams.

The report indicates a 22% global decrease in fraudulent celebrity ads in the first half of 2025 compared to ad impressions. Meta continues its efforts by deleting fake accounts and partnering with agencies like the U.S. DOJ's Scam Center Strike Force. In Thailand, Meta removed 7.3 million pieces of Facebook content and over 15,000 on Instagram in the first half of 2025.

Additional actions in Thailand include deleting over 66,000 Facebook accounts and more than 24,000 Instagram accounts, with significant pre-report removal rates. Over 380,000 fraudulent ads were eliminated, and more than 3,000 ad accounts were banned. Meta is striving to stay ahead of scams with proactive and collaborative measures globally, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Over 6,400 deceptive items were removed across Asia-Pacific.
