The Thai government is urging citizens in South Korea who are overstaying or working illegally to take advantage of an amnesty program offered by the Korea Immigration Service. This initiative, running until the end of February, allows undocumented individuals to report, avoid legal penalties, and return to Thailand. The program aims to reduce the number of illegal stayers and prevent blacklisting.

Previously, a similar amnesty resulted in over 8,000 individuals returning home. According to the Korean Justice Ministry, around 145,000 Thais were illegally residing in South Korea last year, with this number reducing to approximately 120,000, as stated by Thai Ambassador Tanee Sangrat. These individuals are primarily located in cities such as Seoul, Hwaseong, and Suwon.

Failure to comply with the amnesty may result in fines and potential blacklisting, leading to temporary or permanent bans from re-entry into Korea. The program represents a critical opportunity for undocumented residents to regularize their status without facing harsh consequences. Experts stress the importance of this initiative as a step towards reducing illegal immigration and maintaining diplomatic relations.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on monitoring the impact of the amnesty program and its contribution to decreasing the illegal populace in South Korea. Authorities will likely assess its success as they strategize future immigration policies, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand advises citizens to join South Korea’s amnesty program to avoid penalties.
  • The initiative successfully reduced illegal residents in previous years.
  • Failing to participate risks fines and entry bans for overstayers.
