Two army instructors have been sentenced to jail for their involvement in the death of conscript Kittithorn Wiangbanphot at Mengrai Maharaj Camp in Chiang Rai. The Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases Region 5 found them guilty of subjecting Kittithorn to inhumane treatment during training in 2023. He died on July 16 from septicaemia after falling ill.

Initially facing one-year sentences under the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act 2022, the instructors had their terms reduced to eight months for providing useful testimony. Kittithorn’s wife, Kaewkanya Saelee, expressed relief over the recognition of her husband's life and her successful testimony. She highlighted her resolve to seek justice, driven by their child growing up without their father.

Kaewkanya urged the military to learn from this case, emphasizing the importance of treating conscripts with dignity. She called on the military to ensure these soldiers, who are fulfilling their duty, receive humane treatment and are regarded as family members. "No one wants to be conscripted, but it is a duty… Once you take our children, please look after them as if they were your own," she stated.

Human rights defender, Pornpen Khongkachonkiet, noted the case as a vital precedent for holding state officials accountable for abusing authority. It highlights the need to protect vulnerable individuals in structured environments like the military.

Looking forward, this ruling could influence future military training practices and protocols to safeguard the rights and welfare of conscripts. The military may implement stricter oversight and training to prevent similar incidents and promote a culture of respect and care, reported Bangkok Post.
