December 22, 2025Dec 22 A Hungarian man wanted for child sexual abuse has been arrested in Myanmar and extradited to Budapest, police confirmed on Friday Tamás Zoltán Cs., the subject of an international arrest warrant issued on 7 November by the Budapest Regional Court, was accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of twelve. He fled abroad but was tracked down through cooperation between Hungary’s International Criminal Cooperation Centre (NEBEK) and Myanmar’s authorities. The suspect was returned to Hungary on 19 December. The case highlights both the reach of international policing and the vulnerabilities that exist in Southeast Asia, where fugitives often seek refuge. Myanmar, in particular, has long struggled with issues of sexual violence and exploitation. Reports from international organisations show that sexual violence against children and women has been a persistent problem in Myanmar, often exacerbated by conflict and weak law enforcement. The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar has documented widespread crimes against humanity, noting that children are among the most severely affected. Analysts point out that the military has historically used sexual violence as a weapon of war, targeting women and girls in ethnic minority areas. Beyond conflict zones, Myanmar’s limited child protection infrastructure has made it vulnerable to exploitation. Human rights groups have warned that child trafficking and sexual abuse cases are under‑reported, partly due to stigma and fear of reprisals. The UN has also flagged Myanmar as one of the countries where sexual violence against children remains insufficiently addressed. Myanmar’s challenges are not unique in Southeast Asia. The region has long been a destination for sex tourism and child exploitation networks, though governments have stepped up cooperation with Interpol and neighbouring states to combat these crimes. Arrests like that of Tamás Zoltán Cs. demonstrate how fugitives can exploit gaps in enforcement but also how international collaboration can close them. Hungarian authorities say the suspect will face trial at home. For Myanmar, the case underscores the need to strengthen child protection laws and enforcement mechanisms, especially as the country continues to grapple with internal conflict and instability. -2025-12-22 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
