The Australian government has called for an immediate ceasefire amid ongoing military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, warning that the situation has rapidly escalated in both scale and intensity. Canberra said the continued fighting, including the use of heavy destructive weapons, is worsening humanitarian impacts on communities on both sides of the border. The statement underscored Australia’s deep concern about civilian safety and regional stability as hostilities persist.

The clashes form part of a renewed period of tension along the Cambodia–Thailand border, where disputes have previously led to armed confrontations. Australia noted that the current phase of fighting has intensified quickly, with increasingly destructive military capabilities being deployed. The government highlighted that the conflict is affecting not only military positions but also civilian populations and infrastructure in nearby areas.

In its response, Australia expressed condolences to families who have lost loved ones as a result of the violence. The statement called on both Cambodia and Thailand to ensure the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage during the conflict. Australia stressed that all parties must strictly adhere to their obligations under international law, particularly in relation to the conduct of hostilities and the safeguarding of non-combatants.

Australia urged both governments to de-escalate tensions and take fast and effective steps to cease hostilities. This includes implementing commitments already made under the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, which Australia cited as a key framework for reducing tensions. The government also encouraged Cambodia and Thailand to engage constructively and in good faith during the General Border Committee Meeting, describing dialogue as essential to achieving a lasting and peaceful resolution.

The statement further noted that Australia welcomes ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. It specifically acknowledged the roles being played by ASEAN, Malaysia and the United States in supporting initiatives to halt the fighting. Australia indicated that such multilateral engagement is important in creating conditions for dialogue and preventing further deterioration of the situation.

Khoasod reported that Australia signalled that sustained diplomatic engagement will be necessary to move from a ceasefire towards longer-term stability. The government emphasised that meaningful negotiations and respect for existing agreements will be critical to reducing the risk of renewed violence. Canberra’s remarks suggest continued international attention on the border dispute, with a focus on civilian protection and peaceful resolution through established regional mechanisms.
