Police in Pattaya have taken a 34-year-old man into custody after he surrendered over a knife attack that injured an Indian tourist at a birthday party, prompting renewed scrutiny of his explanation for the assault. The suspect, identified as Mr Thanwa, presented himself to investigators in the early hours of 28 December at Pattaya City Police Station. The victim sustained injuries and remains under medical care, delaying a full account of events.

The incident occurred late at night during a birthday celebration, where a male assailant used a knife to attack an Indian tourist at the venue. Closed-circuit television footage clearly captured the assault and recorded the registration plate of the motorcycle used by the attacker to flee the scene. These images enabled investigators to rapidly identify and track the suspect.

At 03.46 on 28 December, Mr Thanwa, a rider providing passenger transport services, surrendered to investigating officers at Pattaya City Police Station. During questioning, he confessed to being the attacker and claimed he acted after being startled by the sound of fireworks at the birthday party. However, witnesses who attended the event told police there were no fireworks or firecrackers, stating only that balloons had burst, raising doubts about the suspect’s account.

Investigators said they are not convinced by the initial statement and are continuing detailed questioning to establish the true motive for the attack. Police have indicated that inconsistencies between the suspect’s claims and witness testimony are a key focus of the ongoing inquiry. Officers from the investigation and intelligence units are jointly handling the case to ensure all evidence is examined.

Authorities said the investigation will proceed once the injured tourist has recovered sufficiently to give a formal statement. His testimony is expected to be central to clarifying the sequence of events and confirming whether any provocation occurred before the assault. Police stressed that legal proceedings will follow due process once all facts are established.

Well there is a lot of 'taken into custody', also being tracked and traced due to CCTV of his motorcycle, but didn't he walk into the police station and surrender himself as they all sat at their desks or not?

Is this a "blue-on-blue" stabbing (involving just one nationality)?

It reads like Mr. Thanwa and the Indian guy were in a relationship, and they had a domestic dispute.

May I ask where you read that ????

A motorcycle taxi driver?  So one of the usual suspects?

So the cops tracked him, yet he went to the cops..?? investigating officers seem a bit slack then.

Some of the explanations for crimes here are so whacky as to be absolutely unbelievable.

This guy says fireworks being let off made him lash out with a knife and stab someone. And the cops take it seriously and start investigating it. Then an alternative theory floats up that there weren’t fireworks but maybe it was balloons busting.

I mean, come on. Whether there was a loud noise or not, who cares? It’s not an explanation of why the assumed culprit stabbed someone. In fact, I’d find him guilty just off the back of such a pathetic excuse.

I read it between the lines.

Yes.  That's usually where you find "there's more to the story."

Are they saying there's no intelligence in the investigation unit ??

It seems Mr. Thanwa might have connections through a chain of people, making some prior arrangements to cover his bases. Why else would he turn himself in? He's unlikely to end up behind bars; everything appears to have been settled discreetly, with everyone parting ways afterward. TIT

I thought that was obvious.

the attacker and claimed he acted after being startled by the sound of fireworks

So, what if he did here a loud bang. Don't give him any right to stab somebody from behind. Probably knew they had him on CCTV so gave himself in.

Apparently, not to some.
