A violent encounter with police in Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district on Monday night resulted in the death of one drug trafficker and the escape of another. Authorities discovered at least 2 million methamphetamine pills inside an abandoned vehicle, after police pursued a white Toyota Vios with links to local drug smuggling operations. The incident underscores ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.

The confrontation began around 9:30 PM when Border Patrol Police attempted to stop the suspect vehicle on Highway 4016 near Ban San Khong. Despite signals to halt, the Vios accelerated and rammed a police car, initiating a shootout when the vehicle's occupants opened fire. The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled into a nearby rice field while exchanging gunfire with police, which continued for about three minutes.

One suspect was found dead at the scene, while the other managed to escape. No police officers were injured during the incident. Authorities' subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 10 bags filled with over 2 million methamphetamine pills, although some reports suggest the number may be as high as 2.5 million.

Efforts are underway to capture the fleeing suspect, as investigators continue to probe the operation. The confiscated drugs will serve as critical evidence in ongoing investigations led by Mae Ai police. This event highlights the persistent drug trafficking challenges within the region and the significant risks faced by law enforcement in their efforts to curb illegal activities.

Looking ahead, police are intensifying their search for the escaped suspect and heightening surveillance in border areas to prevent further smuggling attempts. The case sheds light on broader issues of drug trafficking in the area and the collaborative measures being taken to address them, reported Bangkok Post.
