ASEAN to Review Myanmar’s Disputed Election

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that ASEAN leaders will carefully assess developments in Myanmar following the first phase of its controversial election, held over the weekend amid ongoing civil war.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, Anwar – who currently chairs the 11-member bloc – said any evaluation of Myanmar’s political process would be “sequenced” and guided by the need to reduce violence, avoid deepening divisions, and preserve the possibility of an inclusive and credible path forward.

The polls, conducted in stages across the country, have been widely condemned by the United Nations, Western governments and human rights groups as a sham designed to entrench military rule through proxies. Myanmar’s ruling junta has rejected those claims, insisting the vote reflects public support and is free from coercion.

Malaysia’s foreign minister has previously urged the junta to honour the “Five-Point Consensus” peace plan agreed with ASEAN in 2021, which called for dialogue and an end to violence. The plan has largely stalled, with Myanmar’s military refusing to engage with opponents it labels terrorists.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the 2021 coup that ousted its civilian government, sparking an armed rebellion that has seized large areas of territory and created one of Asia’s worst humanitarian crises.

As ASEAN weighs its response, the bloc faces mounting pressure to balance regional stability with calls for accountability, while Myanmar’s future remains deeply uncertain.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Whatever the outcome of ASEAN's "careful assessment" it won't change anything in Myanmar because the military regime will just ignore it. All this talk of evaluating Myanmar's political processes is just meaningless diplomatic jargon because it's bleedingly obvious that the so-called election was a sham and ASEAN is powerless to do anything because any actions that it takes can only be done with the consensus of all members. Unfortunately much like the UN these days, ASEAN is all talk and little action.
