The Breakfast Coffee Scam

Featured Replies

We all know the breakfast coffee scam by now. Order an all-inclusive fry-up and it comes with a mug of tea or coffee—except the “coffee” is just a Nestlé sugar pack in hot water. Then it’s 30 baht extra for a proper brewed coffee. Is this just taking the piss, or is that 30 baht basically pure profit?

I thought Nicky's 99 baht breakfast had just instant but it tastes better than that.

Makes sense for the cheap breakfasts to not have ground coffee as it costs more, they probably make 10 baht a meal if they're lucky

Actually I'm referencing the 200 baht range breakfasts here in Pattaya where they still try and whack you for an extra 30 baht for a proper brewed coffee .

I won't name and shame but these are busy popular places

Did you ever run a restaurant?

The business owners have bills to pay, staff to support.

They crunch the numbers , you don't.

Just do the math in your head. If you think you're getting ripped off, cook your eggs yourself at home.

Has it ever occurred to you that the real cost of a breakfast might be 250 Baht if they didn't cut corners on instant coffee?

The whole thing is sort of a scam to me.

Cheap people love to brag about the great deals they get at these places.

In reality it is no bargain especially for lousy food. Add up the cost of 2 greasy eggs, one or two small lousy hotdogs, a piece of white bread, maybe a spoon of beans, and terrible instant sewer water taste coffee.

It probably cost them 35 or 40 b and how much are they charging?

How much profit do you think they should make from each breakfast?

2 Baht?

Don't eat out every morning if it's too expensive for you.

100 Baht is nothing. Breakfast places back home are 10 times more expensive.

You forgot to add the following costs the restaurant incurs to provide the breakfast.

Building rent/mortgage, electricity, gas, staff wages, cutlery and crockery, condiments, insurance, licences, repairs and maintenance, etc etc.

You already have... (yourself).

Many would embarrassed about such a thread complaining about 30 baht proper brewed coffee !!!

Do we need to consider that most of these restaurant "packages" are plainly scams for the guilable falangs ?

The thing is coffee beans when bought in bulk are cheaper than these coffee packs , so you're probably in on the scam

Irrelevant to the point I made in reply to bkk6060 who had missed out on some of the contributors to the total breakfast's cost, so take your thumbs down little nicky and stir it into your cheap breakfast coffee.

Who are the "we" people?

Order tea then go to Starbucks for a coffee... It's probably delicious and worth the money. Post a selfie drinking it please.

If he's complaining about a 30 baht coffee, he'd wee himself if he went to Starbucks and saw their prices.

Sorry, but with this comment you disqualify yourself. Good Coffee beans are not so cheap as you might think.

With the whole thread he's disqualified himself !!!...

My espresso machine cost around 40,000 baht, and the coffee itself is about 1,200 baht per kilogram.

On its own, the beans work out to roughly 20 baht per cup. Add in milk, sugar, or electricity, and the cost rises slightly.

The cost of the machine itself adds significantly to each cup at first, but this expense is gradually amortised over time. Assuming two cups a day, the total cost per cup is around 80 baht after the first year, falling to roughly 35 baht after five years.

Of course Mokka Pot or French Press both makes decent coffee an the luxury of an espresso machine is not essential to decent cup of coffee - but as you pointed out - choosing decent beans is.

Cost could probably be cut down to 10-15 baht per cup with bulk-buy robusta beans - but the shop still has to make a profit somewhere.

I doubt any restaurant is paying retail.

Nescafe 3 in 1 red packs bulk buy.

60 satchels to a pack.

12 packs to a box.

I order an 'American' breakfast and I'm still waiting for the bottomless cup.

That's why the moka pot is best, never breaks, inexpensive, good coffee

A good machine does not break down so easy. Just do not buy the cheapest models because the parts used are of low quality.

Always a possibility - is that why you always take taxi's and refuse to own a car ?
