Police have arrested a 31-year-old driver after he abandoned a sealed pickup truck containing 25 undocumented Myanmar migrants during a highway chase in Nakhon Sawan. The incident occurred on 3 January 2026 when officers from the Highway Police intercepted a suspicious vehicle on Highway 122 at kilometre marker 12 in Nakhon Sawan Tok subdistrict, Mueang district, Nakhon Sawan province. All migrants were found alive but packed tightly inside the enclosed rear compartment without legal travel documents.

The arrest followed orders from Pol Maj Gen Pornsak Laorujiralai, commander of the Highway Police Division, who instructed senior officers including Pol Col Thatch Pho Suwan and Pol Lt Col Wachira Amrit to intensify operations against human smuggling along key routes. Officers noticed a box-style pickup truck with Tak province registration driving at unusually high speed and appearing heavily laden. When signalled to stop for inspection, the driver accelerated and attempted to flee.

The driver later abandoned the vehicle and ran into nearby woodland to evade arrest, using darkness and makeshift shelters to hide. Police established a perimeter and tracked him down to a small corrugated metal hut, where he was detained and identified as Mr Piyawut. Inside the sealed cargo area of the pickup, officers discovered 25 Myanmar nationals, comprising nine men and 16 women, none of whom could produce passports or permits to remain in Thailand.

During questioning, Mr Piyawut confessed to being hired to transport the migrants from Tak province to the Talaad Thai market in Pathum Thani. He stated he was promised a payment of 5,000 baht for the job, while each migrant had reportedly paid brokers 20,000 baht for the journey. The case highlights the continued risks faced by migrants and the relatively low payments received by drivers compared with the sums extracted by trafficking networks.

Khoasod reported that authorities have transferred Mr Piyawut and all 25 migrants to investigators at Mueang Nakhon Sawan Police Station for legal proceedings. Police have confirmed that the investigation will be expanded to identify and prosecute other individuals involved in the smuggling operation. The case forms part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal labour trafficking along strategic transport corridors.
