January 8Jan 8 AAA senior Myanmar military commander and more than a dozen soldiers have been killed in an ambush by the Arakan Army (AA) near the Rakhine–Bago border, rebel forces said.Colonel Han Lin Aung, head of Military Operations Command No. 10 (MOC-10), was reportedly struck on 4 January when AA fighters attacked his column near Point 666 hill in the Nyaung Kyo area of Padaung Township. The colonel, a graduate of the Defence Service Academy’s 43rd intake, had only been promoted to commander of MOC-10 in October. The Irrawaddy could not independently verify the casualties, but AA spokesman Khaing Thukha confirmed the attack to Rakhine-based media. The junta has deployed large troop numbers to Nyaung Kyo in an effort to halt AA advances into Padaung, a strategically sensitive area that hosts several ordnance factories along the Irrawaddy River. Reinforcements have included battalions under MOC-10, headquartered in Kale.Fighting has intensified along the Rakhine Yoma–Bago road, where AA forces are besieging military bases while regime troops attempt counteroffensives. In late December, AA fighters claimed to have killed around 60 junta soldiers and captured a dozen more during battles to retake Point 666.The AA now controls most of Rakhine State and Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State. Its focus has shifted to seizing the Rakhine capital Sittwe and Kyaukphyu port, a site of major Chinese investment. The group is also pressing deeper into central Myanmar, sparking clashes across Bago, Ayeyarwady and Magwe regions. The death of Colonel Han Lin Aung underscores the scale of the conflict, as the AA consolidates its hold in western Myanmar and expands its reach into the country’s heartland.-2026-01-08 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
