A fishing boat carrying 4,000 litres of smuggled diesel was intercepted at a pier in Muang district early Tuesday morning. Suspicious movements were noted around the local vessel, Afzeen, at the pier in tambon Tanyong Po around 1:10 am. Authorities from the Office of Marine Enforcement Command 3 boarded the boat, discovering a modified tank filled with untaxed diesel.

The helmsman, Muhammad Sugree Tahmad, aged 52, confessed to illegally importing the fuel from a neighboring country. The diesel was confiscated, and Tahmad faced a fine of 148,800 baht for violating the Excise Act. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in curbing fuel smuggling in the region.

The boat's interception is part of increased surveillance efforts aimed at tackling illegal fuel trading. Authorities have been tightening measures due to a rise in smuggling activities, which significantly affect local economies and tax revenues. Expert views suggest this seizure may lead to heightened enforcement and stricter penalties to deter future violations.

Looking forward, officials plan to intensify monitoring around key smuggling routes to prevent similar incidents. Efforts include reinforcing collaborations with neighboring countries to better track and intercept illicit fuel movements. This enhanced vigilance aims to secure the region’s economic interests and legal compliance, reported Bangkok Post.
