Bangladesh Detains Rohingya Rebels at Border

Bangladesh has tightened security along its frontier with Myanmar after detaining 53 suspected members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), a militant group accused of crossing illegally into its territory. The move comes amid escalating violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where clashes between armed factions and the military junta have spilled over into border communities.

Officials confirmed the arrests late on Sunday, saying the group was intercepted in Cox’s Bazar, home to more than a million Rohingya refugees. Colonel Moinuddin Ahmed of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) told AFP: “We are on high alert and have already detained 53 people for trespassing.” One detainee was taken to hospital, while the rest remain in police custody as legal proceedings begin.

The incident has heightened fears in villages near the border, where residents report hearing gunfire and mortar shelling from across the frontier. Witnesses described plumes of smoke rising from Myanmar territory, with some locals resorting to wearing helmets when venturing outdoors. A 12‑year‑old girl was among those injured in recent days, underscoring the risks faced by civilians caught in the crossfire.

ARSA, formed to resist persecution of the Rohingya minority, is now locked in a bitter struggle with the rival Arakan Army, while Myanmar’s military continues air strikes in the region. “There is now a three‑way conflict,” a senior Bangladeshi paramilitary official explained, noting the complexity of the fighting just beyond the border.

Dhaka has deployed additional law enforcement units to monitor villages and prevent further illegal crossings. The government insists it will not allow its territory to be used as a base for militant activity, but the proximity of the violence poses a growing challenge.

For Bangladesh, already burdened with hosting vast numbers of Rohingya refugees, the latest escalation raises fresh concerns about stability and security. With tensions mounting and the humanitarian situation fragile, the country’s vigilance along the frontier is likely to remain intense in the weeks ahead.
