Chanthaburi Border Tightened as Chinese Workers Detained

Thai naval authorities have tightened security along the Chanthaburi border, detaining 13 Chinese migrant workers suspected of links to cybercrime networks and intercepting a separate drug smuggling attempt. The operations aim to prevent Thailand’s border areas from being used for illegal crossings, online fraud, and cross-border narcotics trafficking. All suspects have been taken into custody for legal proceedings, with authorities stressing national security and public safety.

The Border Protection Command for Chanthaburi and Trat (BPCCT) has been enforcing stricter measures to curb illegal immigration, transnational crime, drugs and emerging security threats. These include cyber-related offences and online scams, which officials say increasingly exploit border routes. The command has coordinated closely with immigration and police agencies to enhance surveillance and enforcement.

Rear Admiral Parat Rattanachaiyaphan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, said the latest operation took place at 2.00am on 15 January 2026. A naval task force from Chanthaburi, working with Chanthaburi Immigration officers, discovered a group of 13 Chinese nationals travelling through difficult terrain near Ban Suan Som, in Saton subdistrict of Soi Dao district, Chanthaburi province. Initial checks found that none of the individuals could produce valid travel documents.

Preliminary questioning indicated that the group was linked to transnational criminal organisations, particularly online scam or cyber fraud networks. Authorities believe foreign workers are used by such networks to commit crimes in neighbouring countries, with Thai border areas serving as transit routes for entry, exit, or escape. Naval officers detained all 13 individuals for initial investigation before transferring them to Chanthaburi Immigration and Saton Police Station to proceed under legal procedures.

In a separate incident on 13 January 2026, BPCCT forces detected a suspect attempting to cross the border via a natural route along Khlong Takian canal. The incident occurred in Village 4, Khlong Yai subdistrict, Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi province. A search identified the suspect as a Thai national, with Category 1 narcotics and related equipment seized as evidence.

The suspect confessed to planning to smuggle the drugs across the border for sale in a neighbouring country. Officers formally charged the individual and transferred the suspect and seized items to Pong Nam Ron Police Station for prosecution. Authorities said the case highlighted ongoing risks of drug trafficking through remote border areas.

SiamRath reported that The Royal Thai Navy confirmed that both operations were conducted within the legal framework, with respect for human rights and transparency. Officials said border controls would continue to be intensified to prevent illegal entry, drug trafficking, and cybercrime in all forms. The measures are intended to safeguard national security and protect the public.
