Pattaya officials launched a crackdown on street begging on January 15, targeting popular tourist areas and detaining 15 individuals. The operation was conducted by Bang Lamung Deputy District Chief Nathaphop Yom Jinda and Pattaya Deputy Mayor Damrongkiat Phinitkan, supported by multiple local agencies. The detained included both repeat offenders and foreign nationals, who are subject to fines or deportation.

This initiative, led by local authorities, involved coordinated patrols around Beach Road and other key locations. The focus was on deterring activities that damage Pattaya's reputation as a tourist destination. In cases of foreign nationals found begging, deportation processes are initiated, while Thai nationals are fined according to local laws.

Mothers found begging with children had their children temporarily removed for care and underwent DNA testing to confirm relations. Deputy Mayor Damrongkiat emphasized the importance of maintaining Pattaya’s image and assured that operations were conducted with respect for human rights. Officers distributed materials from the "No Giving Money to Beggars" campaign, promoting public awareness.

The operation's detentions included five women, seven men, two Myanmar nationals, and a child. Most detainees were identified as repeat offenders, highlighting a persistent issue. Authorities urge the public to report begging cases via a dedicated hotline to foster a collective response.

This action aligns with wider efforts across Thailand, where officials encourage refraining from giving to beggars amid growing concerns over homelessness in cities like Phuket and Bangkok. Pattaya continues to promote anti-begging campaigns to maintain its tourist-friendly image, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Pattaya officials detained 15 beggars in a recent crackdown.

That's the way to go....arrest the beggars and fine them!....Well....not the actual beggars...their minders and gang members that control them!

wonder whether the foreign national 'caucasian' beggars got wind before the fact?

I don't know. I've been visiting pattaya since 2004. Right now I'm seeing more beggars than I recall ever seeing in past years
