A Jersey woman has spoken of the challenges and hope she witnesses daily while working in one of the world’s largest refugee camps.

Amber Mezbourian began her role as a UN Junior Professional Officer in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, at the start of 2025. Sponsored by Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), she is part of the UN Refugee Agency’s efforts to support more than a million Rohingya people who fled persecution in Myanmar.

Mezbourian describes the camps as “tightly packed into an area nearly five times smaller than Jersey,” with families living in bamboo and tarpaulin shelters that offer little protection from the heat. “Life in the camps is really challenging,” she said, adding that UNHCR and partner organisations are working to provide safety, dignity and hope.

Her role ranges from preparing briefing notes for high-level meetings to coordinating donor visits. She also travels to Bhasan Char, a small island built by the Bangladeshi government to ease overcrowding in Cox’s Bazar. There, she noted the contrast: “The orderly streets and grid system layout is a huge change from the chaos of the camps, but it can feel isolated, with many refugees separated from family members.”

Mezbourian has visited spaces dedicated to women and girls, describing them as “really inspirational.” These centres offer activities such as sewing, art, and dance, alongside lessons on rights and empowerment.

JOA has supported the Rohingya for five years, funding UNHCR programmes since 2021 and sponsoring five professionals into roles worldwide. Chairwoman Deputy Carolyn Labey said Jersey’s contribution is significant: “It’s something all islanders should be incredibly proud of. We’re up there with countries like Australia, Canada, Denmark and Norway, playing our part in vital humanitarian work.”

For Mezbourian, the work is both demanding and rewarding. Amid overcrowded streets and the daily struggle of camp life, she sees resilience and determination. Her presence, backed by Jersey’s support, highlights how even a small island can make a global impact.
