The highly debated cable car project at Phu Kradueng in Thailand has advanced, with completion scheduled for 2028. The announcement follows the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on Friday between the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Architecture. This development marks a significant move towards modernising tourism in Phu Kradueng National Park, despite over 30 years of discussion.

The university's Faculty of Architecture plans to complete the upcoming environmental impact assessment (EIA) by mid-year. Attapol Charoenchansa, the department's chief, emphasised the importance of adhering to strict laws and regulations to ensure minimal environmental disruption. While the project has long sparked controversy, Charoenchansa expressed optimism about gaining acceptance from environmental groups.

The Pha Mark Dook Cliff is considered a potential site for a cable car tower, chosen for its minimal impact on trekking routes and scenic views. The park will continue to close seasonally for natural recovery, ensuring environmental preservation remains a priority. This development follows two decades of on-and-off discussions surrounding the project’s feasibility and environmental concerns.

DASTA director Siripakorn Cheawsamoot outlined plans for a mono-cable detachable gondola system, featuring 32 cabins and designed to transport both passengers and waste efficiently. The system will operate 240 days a year, from October to May, carrying up to 368 passengers per hour, translating to about 3,680 daily. This setup aims to bolster tourism while maintaining ecological balance.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on completing the EIA and securing all necessary approvals. Authorities are committed to aligning the project with sustainable tourism ideals, hoping to set a benchmark for future developments. Should the cable car proceed as expected, it promises to transform access to Phu Kradueng, making the experience more accessible for visitors while safeguarding natural attractions, reported Thai PBS WORLD.

Key Takeaways:

  • Phu Kradueng cable car project is expected to be completed by 2028.

  • Environmental impact assessment is due mid-year, key for progression.

  • New cable car system to enhance tourism while preserving nature.
