The Thai government is cracking down on contractors failing public safety standards after another accident on Rama II Road. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced this move following repeated incidents, stating that administrative orders would replace civil contracts to protect citizens. This decision comes in response to the third construction-related accident in a week, including a recent road collapse.

On Thursday, a gantry crane accident at an elevated expressway project on Rama II Road resulted in two deaths and five injuries. This incident follows a tragic crane accident in Nakhon Ratchasima, where a crane fell onto a train, killing 30 and injuring 69. Anutin ordered Thailand's Ministry of Transport to cancel contracts with Italian-Thai Development Plc and to initiate legal action while reviewing safety across all construction projects.

Reacting to public safety concerns, Mr Anutin mentioned that the latest road subsidence on Saturday was due to a burst water pipe, not structural flaws. The collapse created a sinkhole, causing a pickup truck to fall, though no injuries were reported. Emergency crews were promptly dispatched, and repairs are underway.

Structural engineering experts, including Prof Amorn Pimanmas, suggest that soil movement and insufficient retaining systems may cause such subsidence, emphasising the need for robust safety measures. Ongoing investigations into the Nakhon Ratchasima incident aim to determine if negligence or equipment failure is to blame. Police have interrogated engineers from ITD, and forensic experts are still examining causes.

The government's firm stance on contractor accountability underscores the stringent measures it is taking to ensure public safety. As investigations continue, the focus remains on preventing structural failures caused by negligence, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai government bolsters safety measures after repeated accidents.

  • Contracts with faulty contractors like ITD are being cancelled.

  • Ongoing investigations focus on negligence and equipment safety.

Your post reminds me of the quote he is a bit short of a picnic ... thanks

How can they crack down on "Unsafe Contractors" - seems to imply they know who they are, so how did they get the contracts in the first place. And "administrative orders" don't aftually DO anything. People need to do things - Thailand loves to reactively create rules, but the same people thAt didn't enforce the old rules, won't enforce the new ones 🙄

No more Ching Chong' balsa wood cranes,or buildings until all the rest have fallen down and some more coin changes hands they mean🤔

Will Sino-Thai Engineering be examined for compliance?
