Police raided a hotel in Chiang Mai on January 15, arresting two Chinese men and a Thai woman for operating illegally. The investigation, led by the Chiang Mai Provincial Immigration Office, revealed that the Thai woman was a nominee for the Chinese partners, not a genuine business partner. One Chinese woman involved evaded arrest and is currently at large.

The operation followed an investigation into nominee business practices, where foreign nationals use Thai citizens to circumvent local ownership laws. The detained suspects, identified as Ma, Mi, and Jin, used their arrangement to control financial transactions and management decisions through accounts belonging to the Chinese nationals. The hotel, valued at around 3 million baht, was funded entirely by these Chinese partners.

Authorities suspect the Thai nominee was instrumental in bypassing legal restrictions on foreign ownership. As profits were directed to the Chinese partners' accounts, suspicions strengthened about the Thai woman's involvement in the scheme. Police are actively pursuing the fugitive Chinese woman, indicating ongoing investigations and potential legal actions.

Sarawut Khonyai, Commander of Immigration Division 5, emphasized Thailand's openness to foreign business, contingent on adherence to local laws. He cautioned Thai citizens against acting as nominees for foreign enterprises, highlighting the legal risks involved. This incident mirrors a prior crackdown in November on Koh Samui, involving British nationals and Thai women, where foreign operators controlled finances despite Thai ownership in name.

Looking forward, authorities are keen to reinforce legal compliance among foreign investors while ensuring Thai laws are respected. The continuation of these investigations signals a vigilance in regulatory enforcement aimed at maintaining fair business practices within the country, reported The Thaiger,
