Trump invites Cambodia to join ‘Board of Peace’

US President Donald Trump has formally invited Cambodia to become a founding member of a new international organisation he calls the Board of Peace, a body he says will be “one of a kind” in tackling global conflicts.

In a letter dated 16 January 2026, Trump urged Prime Minister Hun Manet to sign Cambodia up as a founding state. He described the initiative as part of a broader plan to consolidate peace worldwide, positioning the Board as both an international organisation and a transitional governing administration.

“Now it is time to turn all of these dreams into reality,” Trump wrote. “At the heart of the plan is The Board of Peace, the most impressive and consequential Board ever assembled.” He added that Cambodia’s participation would make it a party to the charter of the new body.

The proposal builds on Trump’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict, unveiled in September 2025 as a 20-point roadmap. That plan was later acknowledged by the United Nations Security Council in Resolution 2803, adopted in November. Trump now frames the Board of Peace as the central pillar of his vision, bringing together nations to forge lasting stability.

So far, Phnom Penh has remained silent. The Cambodian government has not issued any statement on whether it will accept the invitation. Analysts say the decision could carry weight for Cambodia’s international positioning, particularly as Trump seeks to rally support from a diverse group of countries.

Elsewhere, reactions have been mixed. Some nations have reportedly agreed to join, while others are more cautious. Canada has accepted the invitation but made clear it will not pay the $1 billion fee associated with membership.

The Board of Peace, if established, would mark a significant new experiment in global governance. Whether Cambodia chooses to align itself with Trump’s initiative could signal how far Hun Manet is willing to engage with Washington’s vision of international diplomacy.
