A wild elephant with a calf attacked a village official during an overnight operation to drive the animals out of a community in Prachinburi province, leaving the victim critically injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of 22 January 2026 and prompted an urgent medical response and heightened wildlife monitoring in the area.

According to officials, the attack took place at around 02.00 in Moo 7, Ban Khao Khat, Kaeng Dinso sub-district, Na Di district, Prachinburi. The injured man was part of a volunteer team attempting to push a mother elephant and her calf back into Pang Sida National Park, which borders the village.

The victim was identified as Mr Preecha Chaikhun, also known as Ruam, aged 42, who serves as an assistant village headman. He was also the leader of a local volunteer unit tasked with monitoring and deterring wild elephants from entering residential areas.

Background information provided by park authorities stated that villagers had reported elephants standing on a concrete road near the Ban Khao Khat health promotion hospital. Mr Preecha assembled a five-member volunteer team, accompanied by his son and went to the location to respond to the alert.

Officials said the team attempted to frighten the elephants away by firing shots into the air. The animals panicked, and the mother elephant charged at Mr Preecha, who tripped and fell while trying to escape.

The elephant reportedly stood over him, stepping on his body and striking him with its trunk, causing severe injuries. Other volunteers fired warning shots to divert the animal’s attention, allowing them to pull the victim to safety before successfully driving the elephants back into the forest.

Mr Preecha was first taken to Na Di Hospital and later transferred to Kabin Buri Hospital. Relatives reported he suffered a severe head impact and initially lost consciousness. Doctors at Kabin Buri Hospital later confirmed that he had bleeding on the brain and a fractured jaw, but was responsive and able to answer questions. He is being transferred to Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital in Prachinburi for further treatment.

Khoasod reported that Na Di district chief Mr Somjai Phutthasena visited the injured official alongside local leaders and provided initial financial assistance. Provincial governor Mr Weeraphan Dee-on ordered the transfer to ensure specialist care, while Pang Sida National Park officials said they would closely monitor the situation and report further developments.

Who encroached on whose land first? Also don’t mess with a mother protecting her child. I don’t care if it’s human or animal, you’re putting yourself in grave danger, and unfortunately they found out the hard way.

I agree- best plan I was told was to use your mobile- make a trunk call and reverse the charges?

Surely.

I wish the man a swift recovery and hope the village people will research and find a much better way to move the animals from their fields.

That’s the best advice I’ve heard in years. Very funny.
