A foreign female tourist slipped and fell into a deep ravine at a popular scenic spot in Pai Canyon (locally known as Kong Lan) in Mae Hong Son province on the morning of 30 January 2026, prompting a complex rescue operation. Emergency responders successfully lowered rescue personnel by rope to reach the injured woman and brought her to safety before transporting her to Pai Hospital.

The incident occurred at approximately 08:30 when the woman was walking and enjoying the natural sandstone formations at Kong Lan, a well-known but rugged tourist attraction near Pai district. The site is characterised by steep, uneven terrain that can become slippery, especially where loose gravel and narrow ledges are present. Local authorities have previously noted that falls by visitors occur almost every year despite warning signs being installed around hazardous areas.

Rescue teams from the Thung Yao Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, in coordination with the Pai Samakki High-Angle Rescue Team, responded to the emergency. Due to the steep drop, rescuers had to use specialised rope techniques to reach the woman and secure her for extraction. After being brought up, she was stabilised at the scene and then taken by ambulance to Pai Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Officials have reiterated the importance of exercising caution when visiting natural attractions like Pai Canyon, where unprotected cliffs and erosion can create dangerous conditions. Despite the presence of warning signs, the number of annual slips and falls has prompted calls from some local guides for improved safety measures, including barriers or designated viewing platforms. There has been no official statement yet on whether immediate safety upgrades will be undertaken.

Khoasod reported that local tourism and safety authorities are expected to review current risk-mitigation strategies at Kong Lan and similar sites. Meetings later this week may address potential enhancements to signage, visitor guidance and possible physical safety installations to prevent future incidents. The outcome of these discussions is likely to influence how other natural tourist sites in northern Thailand manage visitor safety in challenging environments.
