That's a lot if these numbers are accurate but it represents a 2:1 loss rate which shows why Ukraine has a big manpower problem on the battlefield. Add Ukraine's problem with AWOL and desertions and it shows in good part why Russian troops continue to gain ground. 6:1 or even 4:1 loss rate and it might be a different story. As for "Territorial gains are minimal despite high casualties" this is a war of attrition where gaining 5, 10 or 20 km² in a day is substantial. It's not linear warfare.

While it may be accurate to say Russia has suffered extremely heavy losses, headlines implying 1.2 million deaths or presenting the figure as a fact are simply misleading.

It appears that Russia’s Ministry of Defence has not released verified casualty figures since September 2022. At that time it reported just under 6,000 Russian combat deaths.
