River patrol officers in Chiang Rai have intercepted three Chinese nationals who allegedly entered Thailand illegally by boat from a casino area along the Mekong River, with one suspect found carrying illegal drugs. The arrest took place on the morning of 9 February and led to the seizure of ketamine and crystal methamphetamine, as well as the detention of the suspects for further legal action.

The operation was carried out at 09.10 by the Chiang Rai unit of the Mekong River Peacekeeping Unit (NRPC), which detected a motorised wooden boat bearing Lao nationality crossing the river from the Kings Romans Casino area. Officers observed the vessel travelling at speed with suspicious behaviour as it moved through the Golden Triangle area in Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai province. Surveillance was maintained until the boat docked at Ban Pa Sak Hang Wiang, Moo 9, Wiang subdistrict, to drop off passengers before departing the riverbank.

Upon inspection, officers found three Chinese men who had disembarked from the boat. One of them was identified as Mr Liang, aged 28, a Chinese national from Guangxi province. Authorities noted suspicious behaviour and confirmed that he did not possess valid immigration documents, constituting illegal entry into Thailand.

A search of Mr Liang’s bag uncovered 52.1 grams of ketamine and 2.3 grams of crystal methamphetamine concealed inside a Chinese cigarette packet. A urine test later returned a positive result for narcotics, indicated by a purple colour. During questioning conducted through an interpreter, Mr Liang told officers that he “wanted to go to work with an employer who had arranged to pick him up”.

The commanding officer of the NRPC Chiang Rai unit, Captain Phakorn Maneeam, said the interception followed intelligence reports and close monitoring of cross-border river traffic. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about illegal crossings and drug trafficking along the Mekong River, particularly near casino zones and border communities.

Authorities initially determined that the other two Chinese nationals were not involved with the drugs. They were handed over to Chiang Saen Immigration Police for further processing related to illegal entry. Mr Liang, who was found in possession of narcotics, was transferred to investigators at Chiang Saen Police Station to face charges under Thai law.

Koaded reported that investigations will continue to determine whether the case is linked to wider trafficking networks or organised illegal crossings in the area.
