Five suspected drug traffickers were shot dead and around one million methamphetamine tablets seized following a gun battle between Thai soldiers and a drug caravan in Fang district, Chiang Mai, on 14 February 2026. The clash erupted in broad daylight near Ban San Ju, Mon Pin subdistrict, close to the border. No military casualties were reported.

The operation followed intelligence received by the Pha Muang Task Force indicating that a shipment of methamphetamine would be smuggled across the border. Troops from Company 4, Phadong base, under the Chaiyanuphap Task Force, joined forces with Rangers from Company 3207 of the Ranger Regiment Control Headquarters, 3rd Army Area Operations Centre, to conduct continuous patrols in the area.

At approximately 11.00am on 14 February, the joint patrol encountered a group allegedly attempting to carry narcotics into Thailand using backpacks. A firefight lasting more than five minutes ensued after the suspects reportedly opened fire with military-grade weapons.

Due to the presence of heavy weaponry, commanders ordered reinforcements and secured the area overnight before conducting a detailed inspection the following morning, 15 February 2026. Troops searched within a two-kilometre radius of the clash site. During the sweep, officers found five suspects dead at the scene. Five sacks containing approximately 1,400,000 methamphetamine tablets were discovered scattered across the forest.

Major General Sathit Waiyanon, commander of the Pha Muang Task Force, assigned Colonel Meechai Nilsat, deputy commander of the task force, to lead officials in a joint briefing on the incident. Representatives from the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Region 35, military intelligence units, Fang Provincial Police, Border Patrol Police Unit 334, prosecutors and medical personnel took part in the inspection and documentation process.
