Thailand’s Myanmar peace push sparks scepticism

Thailand has declared itself a “frontline state” in efforts to bring peace to Myanmar, but the move is being met with mixed reactions across the region.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow hosted Myanmar’s junta-appointed foreign minister in Phuket this week, stressing that the talks were informal and not intended as recognition of the military regime. He argued that Thailand, sharing a long and volatile border with Myanmar, is directly affected by the conflict and must play a role in encouraging dialogue.

Yet perceptions of Thailand’s initiative are complicated. For many in Myanmar, especially ethnic groups along the border such as the Karen, Karenni and Shan, Bangkok’s engagement risks being seen as legitimising the junta. Western governments have already dismissed Myanmar’s recent election as flawed, and critics fear Thailand’s outreach could be interpreted as tacit endorsement.

Sihasak insisted otherwise, saying the aim was to push for reconciliation in line with ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus. “This is not about recognising the military government,” he told Thai media. “It is about persuading Myanmar to begin dialogue and reconciliation processes.”

The timing is sensitive. Myanmar’s three-phase election concluded in January, but violence has continued, with ethnic armed groups rejecting the junta’s authority. Thailand’s role as mediator could open space for humanitarian aid and talks, but it also risks hardening positions if seen as siding with the regime.

Observers note that Myanmar’s perception of Thailand’s involvement will be crucial. If communities inside Myanmar view Bangkok as a neutral facilitator, it could help reduce tensions. But if the initiative is seen as external interference or quiet support for the junta, it may deepen mistrust and fuel further conflict.

For now, Thailand is positioning itself as a bridge-builder. Whether Myanmar’s people accept that role remains uncertain — and the stakes, from border security to regional stability, could not be higher.
