Poll: Just 23% Confident 2026 Midterms Won’t Be “Rigged”

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, public confidence in America’s electoral system remains deeply fractured. A new survey by YouGov for Yahoo finds that only 23% of Americans are confident November’s vote will not be “rigged.”

The poll of 1,704 U.S. adults, conducted Feb. 9–12, comes after Donald Trump suggested Republicans should “take over the voting” in 15 states and “nationalize” the midterms — a proposal opposed by 59% of respondents. Just 19% support the idea.

The findings underscore a broader collapse in trust. While 33% of Americans believe the 2026 vote will be rigged, 44% say they are unsure — meaning 77% either expect manipulation or lack confidence in the system.

Partisan confidence has flipped since 2021. After the 2020 election, Democrats were far more likely than Republicans to say the next presidential race would be free and fair. Today, Republicans (37%) express more confidence than Democrats (24%) in the integrity of future elections.

At the same time, concerns about democracy have shifted dramatically. In 2022, nearly half of Republicans said they were “very worried” about the future of U.S. democracy. Now that figure stands at 19%, compared with 66% of Democrats.

When asked who is more likely to try to rig the midterms, respondents who anticipate problems point more often to Republicans (44%) than Democrats (33%). Sixty percent also say Trump is unlikely to accept a Democratic victory in November if it occurs.

The poll also revisits long-running claims about election fraud. While 52% of Americans say Joe Biden won the 2020 election “fair and square,” 28% believe it was stolen from Trump — including 63% of Republicans.

On policy, however, voters are more supportive of stricter registration rules. Sixty-two percent favor requiring documentary proof of citizenship — such as a passport or birth certificate — to register to vote, a key provision in the GOP-backed SAVE Act. The measure passed the House and now faces a likely blockade in the Senate.

At the same time, Americans broadly oppose making voting harder through limits on early voting or mail ballots.

The data paints a picture of an electorate deeply divided — skeptical of institutions, polarized along party lines, yet conflicted over how far reforms should go.

Key Takeaways

  1. Confidence Crisis
Only 23% of Americans are confident the 2026 midterms won’t be rigged; 77% either expect problems or are unsure.

  2. Majority Oppose Federal Takeover
59% reject Trump’s call for Republicans to “nationalize” election administration.

  3. Support For ID Rules, Not Restrictions
While 62% back proof-of-citizenship requirements, most oppose making mail or early voting harder.
