Comparing apples with pears, what the F does a PC have to do with a Mac Mini.

Doooh, they are both personal computers which should do whatever the operator asks it to do.

Maybe check your advice again then.

No, why don't YOU check it and prove my AI friends wrong.

Mac mini 2023 model

Display Connection: 1 - HDMI 2.0 (M2) HDMI 2.1 (M2 Pro), Thunderbolt 4 digital video output

Mac mini 2020 model

Display Connection: 1 - HDMI 2.0 port or Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

Test if Mac mini can display on someone else’s monitor (or your tv as it should have an HDMI port). If it doesn’t connect to hdmi, and you have used multiple HDMI cables, then It is the HDMI output and you would need to use the thunderbolt video output.

Otherwise take it in to an AUTHORIZED apple repair center, not these backyard computer mechanics.

Your problem is likely either in the Mac mini, the OS, the cable or the monitor.

For troubleshooting, my first step would be trying a different monitor.

Then using a different hdmi cable

If neither one of these options alleviates the connection problem, I would start worrying about the Mac mini.

I have used a first gen Mac mini as a single use audiobook source for my home network for years, and it still accepts absolutely every monitor I have ever needed to attach it to.

So - have the nerds inspect your cable connections. If monitor and cable is fine, the problem could be the input connector on the Mac mini, but that would make it unlikely that another monitor would work.

Frankly, in your case, with a reasonably modern Mac mini, my approach would be to simple get a second hand monitor that works and let it go (provided the simple troubleshooting above doesn’t reveal anything useful.

No, because don't want to carry it.

It is a MacMini FFS. Take the unit to Tukom or wherever, and try it on ANOTHER MONITOR as eWarrior has just suggested .

Or if YOU have a Smart TV with HDMI inputs, try it there

If this is 27" monitor with FullHD resolution (1920x1080) then the picture will look grainy as the monitor itself has too low resolution to hide the grid between pixels.

So 1920x1080 is, in your opinion, low resolution. My TCL 32, old pre-Smart Samsung 40'' both display my two W11 PCs perfectly. I have a 55 Sammy Smart at higher resolution, and not much difference in either PC or media displays.

you don't watch TV from 25cm distance.

Of course not Tomaz. 32'' TCL in my office I sit about 1 metre away. Home theatre in my lounge I sit about 2.5 metres away from the Sammy 55 UHD.

And I just paid a visit to Specsavers when I was in UK last month. All OK.

From your screenshot, the monitor is recognised and showing the correct resolution. So what, exactly, is the issue? Colour calibration needed on the monitor? As aforementioned, it's a relatively low resolution monitor for a 27". For a pin sharp image, go for a 4k monitor. Can you swap it?

It's easy enough to contact a local Apple specialist to do an after hours call, if you don't mind paying for their time. But I fear the issue may be with the 'budget' monitor. There is no LG U5S to be found anywhere in Thailand. Did you mean LG U55?

Under 24 -27 inches.

Should I remind you that you are complaining about the quality of the image? 😊

Though in all seriousness, the model number you gave for the monitor does not exist. Try again.

I have a 27 inch Dell monitor at 1920x1080 100hz and it's not grainy at all. I use mine on a KVM switch between a desktop running Linux Mint 21 and a Mac Mini M4. The display is just fine. I'm not interested in paying 8K to 12K for a slighly "crisper" resolution. The extra resolution is not worth the significantly extra price. And other than the Mac Mini M4, I shy away from the other highly over-priced Apple gear.

Elementary my Dear Warrior.

It's probably out of warranty, but your best bet is to have it serviced by Apple. Macs are appropriator closed boxes with the interfaces soldered into place, unlike a Intel and AMD based desktops where you can swap out interfaces..

For what it's worth, these are the suggestions given via a search:

I'll take a guess at the monitor being this one: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27u55wsa-w-smart-monitor

An example of the cable you might need in that case would be this one: https://shopee.co.th/product/153078644/45251234633

Poor color quality on an LG monitor connected to a Mac Mini (especially M1/M2/M4 models) is a common issue often caused by macOS misidentifying the display as a TV, resulting in a limited color range (washed-out colors), improper scaling, or forced HDR mode.

Here are the most effective solutions to fix washed-out, pastel, or inaccurate colors:

1. The Quick Fixes (Try First)

  • Toggle HDR Off: Go to System Settings > Displays, select your LG monitor, and turn off High Dynamic Range.

  • Disable True Tone: Turn off True Tone in Display Settings, as it can make external monitors look improperly warmed or yellow.

  • Cycle Monitor Power: Sometimes simply turning the LG monitor off and on again forces a handshake that corrects color detection.

  • Switch to USB-C/DisplayPort: HDMI on many M1/M2 Macs can cause limited color range. Use a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable or a USB-C to USB-C cable for better colour handling.

2. Software Fixes for Washed-Out Colors

  • BetterDisplay App: Download the BetterDisplay app (formerly BetterDummy) from GitHub. It allows you to override macOS's decisions, enabling full RGB range and fixing washed-out colors.

  • Change Color Profile: In System Settings > Displays > Color profile, try switching to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 or Display P3 instead of the "LG HDR" profile.

3. Deep System Adjustments

  • Force RGB Mode: If the Mac detects the monitor as a TV, it uses YCbCr color. You can force it to RGB using Terminal commands or by using the BetterDisplay app mentioned above.

  • Display Resolution (HiDPI): If colors look okay but text is blurry, use BetterDisplay to enable HiDPI mode at your monitor's native resolution.

  • Mirror/Unmirror Display: A known workaround is to toggle screen mirroring on and off in System Settings > Displays.

4. Hardware and Physical Settings

  • Change Monitor Input: Change the input in the LG on-screen menu from "Auto" to HDMI or DisplayPort explicitly.

  • Monitor Black Level: If blacks look grey, go into your LG monitor's on-screen menu settings, find Picture > Black Level, and change it from "Low" to High (or vice versa) to match the Mac's output.

  • Try a different HDMI cable: Ensure it is a certified high-speed cable.

5. Final Resort

  • Update macOS: Ensure you are on the latest version of macOS (e.g., Big Sur 11.3+ included fixes for some of these issues).

  • Reinstall macOS: If the issue persists, the graphics driver subsystem may be corrupted.

First things first - isolate issue.

Mac - Cable - Monitor

a) connect Mac to a different monitor with a different (*high quality) HDMI cable.

That should isolate if the issue is the Mac or the cable or monitor.

Only ever change on component at a time, otherwise you have no idea what can be causing the problem. Cable first, easier and cheaper.

Is a Mac not classed as a Personal Computer?

It is. But there is a big difference!

a dumb TV works just as well... only need an HDMI input

no.... it is a personal computer... no caps.... generally PC means Windoze... otherwise almost everybody just calls it a mac.

Of course, but try to find a ''dumb'' TV.....they call it a monitor.

I have a 40'' dumb 15 year old Sammy into which goes my Firestick. Still looks good to me.

So shall we settle on both PCs and Macs are personal computers. OK?

I still have dumb TV's.... I prefer to make them smart with a more general purpose computing device.

You can. But using & repairing them are not the same.

Like the Firestick I mentioned, or via my Beelink W11 PC with Nord.
