Da Nang has banned commercial activities on sidewalks, including signs, potted plants, and decorative statues. The initiative, announced by the city Peoples' Committee, aims to return sidewalks to pedestrians, curb unauthorized street markets, and tighten parking and traffic regulations. Vehicles must adhere to designated areas to prevent traffic obstructions, while advertisements on poles and trees are prohibited.

In a bid to create clear pedestrian pathways and a clean urban environment, the city has implemented a sidewalk demarcation system. This reserves specific sections for pedestrians and parking based on sidewalk width. The initiative is part of a broader campaign to enhance local habits, attract tourists, and boost the service economy.

The new rules will be enforced in phases, starting with public awareness through March 31, followed by citywide inspections until April 30. Intensive enforcement will involve mobilizing personnel to address violations, with ongoing patrols ensuring long-term compliance. This crackdown is expected to impact street-side businesses and those accustomed to using sidewalks privately.

Critically, local officials will be held accountable for persistent violations, with significant penalties for indecisiveness or obstruction of enforcement. The city administration has made it clear that ward and commune chairpersons will bear responsibility if sidewalk misuse continues.

Moving forward, Da Nang aims to sustain urban order while encouraging residents and businesses to adapt to the new regulations. This structured approach underscores the city's commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety and urban aesthetics, reported VN Express.

Not a bad idea at all.
