Anyone using any SSRIS like Prozac for anxiety?

Featured Replies

Been suffering with anxiety/depression for a few weeks. I think it may be age related as I'm nearly 84 and realizing that time is short and there's not a lot to look forward to.

I've tried relaxation techniques like Wim Hof, but they only work short term before feelings of anxiety return.

Is anyone currently using any SSRI and does it relieve anxiety symptoms and any side effects?

My mums in your situation and around your age.

May I make a few suggestions.

  1. walk as much as you can per day. When it comes to 5pm get out and walk 2 to 3 km. Wear your body out. During the day swim in a pool. If you wake up early go and walk a few kms as well if you can.

  2. go and get the following vitamins tested: Vit d, zinc, copper, iron, vit b12. Deficiencies in any of these can impact your health and mind

  3. go on lazada and buy some St Johns wart tea leaves. Drink a small cup a few hours before you sleep. If you cant find it send me Pm and I will send you a link

  4. Massage and sex before sleep if possible. A good sleep through the night is more likely and wake up and not be ratty in your mind.

Dont go on SSRI's. As soon as you withdraw from them you are probably worse off.

good luck

SSRIs sometimes help but sometimes make anxiety worse.

Mixed anxiety & depression can be challenging to treat.

Consult a good psychiatrist. One who takes time listening and asking questions to get a full understanding of your situation, not one who starts prescribing minutes after you walk in the door.

Counseling may aldo help, perhaps more than medication. And certainly with fewer potential side effects.

Did he mention he was 84 ?

You might like to consider a couple of supplements. L-Tryptophan or 5HTP which are both precursors to Serotonin. They're cheap, available over the counter / online and an alternative to SSRIs. If you Google either of these supplements or check out YouTube, there's a heap of info out there.

Some low strength cannabis gummies might help you. A good mix would help you calm down possibly...........

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,

And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,

Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light

It's no used getting depressed over your time you got left

Your 84 probably going onto 85 and you have had a bloody good run as I said to my late mother once

Life is life , you won't live forever

Sorry to be blunt , but you need to accept the situation, maybe seeing a psychologist would be a better idea someone in the mature age

I mean why drug yourself out , do as much as you can , make goals to travel , etc

I think you need to accept your life is near the end stage and that way you will have no anxiety

Make some goals and keep busy to GO Go bars , wine women and song, party like it's 1984

Do it please

Thanks, have ordered some Trytophan, anything is worth a try, but no there is no evidence that it works.

Well how long do you want to go for?

Stop feeling sorry for yourself and taking medication and go out live life

You will miss out on so much living out your life on SSRIs. Cannabis will help you through this rough spot. If you can find some old-style Thai landrace, try that as well. It's more enlightening than the modern stuff that is highly sedating.

One or two massages a week will help, also. Same therapist each time.

Thai landrace, what is it? Cannabis can also instill feelings of paranoia, it's not all positive.

What Sheryl said is right. You might try St. John's Wort if you aren't wanting to use medications. It's a natural alternative that works with mild depression. I had my one girlfriend try it and it worked, as she had (has) depression, although she stopped using it and her symptoms returned. It's available here at Shopee and Iherb.

Before you comment on something this serious, research awhile.

That paranoia comes from only certain types of cannabis. It all depends on what kind of terpenes are in the specific strain you get.

Have you tried DHEA? It works as a powerful antidepressant at first, without screwing up neither sleep nor sex-drive. Results are usually felt within days, not weeks.

Not heard of DHEA, it's available at pharmacies so I'll give it a try. Thanks.

Tryptophan makes you sleepy. Ideally, you want something that you can take during the day that calms the nerves but does not make you drowsy.

You can search for calming formulations on iHerb. Here is one.

True Calm is a combination of amino acids and their cofactor nutrients formulated to support the normal production and function of calming neurotransmitters in the brain. True Calm includes GABA and glycine, two amino acids that promote relaxed state of mind, along with Taurine, another amino acid with calming properties. These nutrients are blended with Valerian, which is known to interact with the GABA receptors in the nervous system.

It says 4 to 6 weeks before any results felt.

Officially in Thailand, unlike eg in the US or Indonesia, it is classified as a "hormone", not as a supplement, which means you theoretically need a prescription. Some is to be had without a prescription from "behind" the counter though.

Plenty available on Lazada.

I remember being taken aback when I first started taking it over 25 years ago, as I felt the results within no more than 10 days. What I felt was best described as a surge of "stamina". In Germany doctors used the word "Vitalität".

The hospital in Pattaya, My brother, the shrink they sent him to ended up hooking him to the medication, along with a sleeping pill. All I had to do was look it up and it clearly stated not long term.

Finally, I confronted the Doctor with an adminitrator and I noted evidence short term only why was this doctor continue, by the time I notice my brother was worse near full breakdown. I was able with lawyers to work out a deal to slowly get him off the stuff. Last few year he has been taking

supplements Magnesium Glycinate that seem to calm down the aniexty.

Another guy I care for last years have been hooked on similar medication, Stay away from them if one can! plus you 84, congrats!

I'm 85 and still enjoy life. Try to take each day as it comes, and keep body and brain as fit as possible. I'm just not sure if medication really helps, and, coming off it should you need to, is a nightmare. And always remember every creature on earth gets older. You are not alone.

Agree with taking magnesium, particularly at night accompanying camomile tea. Lots of good suggestions and hope this helps.

At 77 yrs of age, I can understand what you are feeling. How many years ahead of me? Is it worth starting anything new now, since I don’t know how long I’m going to live? Getting old = immobility, sickness, loneliness, ……….

However, I have started permitting myself to feel quite self indulgent! Since many years and continuing, I go to gym 3 times a week. I must admit it’s not only for mobility, it’s also for vanity! Yes, pure vanity, but as a plus mobility and health happens to be a great side effect.

I go regularly to my gym, meet the other goers who go at the same time. We joke, say pleasantries to each other and what’s even better, cheer each other on.

I do a lot of weight lifting as well as a bit of cardio. I have taken great pleasure in seeing my body look younger and well muscled in the right places - actually more than I thought possible at my age. This has given me the incentive to wake up in the mornings, I plan my weekly gym routines in order to get max benefits and the result is, I’ve discovered, less contemplation of a bleak future, and a pleasant competition with myself to see what next area of my body I can improve even more.

Having emphysema/COPD, I made a bet with myself that I could do more than 3 mins on the treadmill without passing out from too much CO2. I worked it up to 20 mins without losing to much breath. I’m now attacking/trying to make a deal with the lateral step master machine. I do these cardio exercises after about 60 mins of weights. With each gym session, I challenge myself, maybe increase a weight here and there, but I’m also cautious so as not to overdo things, ending up giving the physiotherapist time rather than the gym.

The pride one feels when one sees little improvements here and there really get your endorphins going. It sort of makes you want to achieve more, as a result you start enjoying other aspects of life too. All of a sudden morbid feelings of depression, thinking about the diminishing years ahead of you seem to become less important. You get busy setting up goals for your immediate achievements, and as you see them slowly get fulfilled, you realise that your goals are to just feel good about yourself - this expands to an inner joy and appreciation of life itself.

Guess you could switch gym for any other sport or activity, but remain consistent. Immerse yourself in your choice, study it, tweak it to suit you.

Best of luck to you with however you find your way out of inertia/depression. My way is just one way of achieving this, but does not suit everyone.
