No Proper Supermarket in Jomtien

I call BS!

Don't slander the locals. Thepprasit Market is always cheaper than any supermarket. Have not once been ripped off nor has there been even an attempt to do so.

Yes fruit and veg in the big supermarkets is very expensive. If that is your thing then Thepprasit is the only place to go.

I have always wondered this ! That supermarket up near the bus station is double the prices of Aldi in Australia

As I’ve posted previously on this forum, I feel I must defend the little Foodmart at the Jomtien bus station. For such a small place, it has a remarkably wide range of foods, including imported stuff

Are you sure there ever was a foodland? I know there was a large sign, but I don't think there was a shop

More accurately described as Ratanakorn Market, in order to distinguish it from the other markets on that road.

Big C In pattaya you mean?

Not 5-10 minutes in traffic .... you need to time it well

And if you dont drive you're stuck on those baht buses. that's hell with groceries

South Pattaya, not far from Thepprasit Road. Right next to Go Wholesale. Use Bolt if you have no transport of your own.

The attraction of Jomtien, for foreign retirees and fugitives anyway, is, I suppose, is partly due to the fact that it is so undeveloped. If your day basically consists of puttering around your condo or hotel, eating at the same cheap restaurants every day, and socializing with other retirees, then no doubt you can be satisfied with doing all your shopping at 7-11 and Tops Daily.

But now that they're building one luxury condo project after another, you would think they would give consideration to simple amenities. The place is practically unwalkable except for the sidewalk fronting the beach and there are really no attractions other than the night market. There are no decent food courts, most of the restaurants are along the beach front (and in general overpriced), and the only entertainment complex is for gay men. Rompho market is filty and filled with rats at night. So what is there to do besides drinking at one of the small bars? It would be nice if there was a park, a major supermarket, sidewalks you can actually use, and a more convenient way to travel than the baht bus.

Anyone remember the 1980s when the only supermarket anywhere in Pattaya was the small one called Spinneys on Soi Post Office beach end!?

There have been rumors for a couple years now that there are some big players looking for a location for a mall somewhere in Jomtien. Still just rumors.

Yeah rumours here, usual people, wishful thinking

You seem to be a glass half empty kind of person. There are food courts along the beachfront, more than just the Night Market. Have you actually visited Jomtien?? There are also food courts and buffet restaurants on Jomtien's Second road. Have you eaten at any of them? Have you visited Smile Market on Second Road?

I live in London. There are no major theatres in my village. I have to go to the West End for that. A big concert? I may need to travel twenty minutes to get there. Why should every place look exactly the same?

Are you unable to travel for some reason?

I used to live at the end of Walking Street. It was bliss. Palm trees waving in the wind, no girlie bars nor noisy tourists. They would get as far as Soi 16 and turn back. Look at that and Bali Hai now...

I think you just like complaining.

I think you might be wrong about this, as there was Friendship Supermarket on South Pattaya Road, close to Walking Street.

There was no Netflix when theatres were invented. Plenty of entertainment online.

Concerts are not needed. I don't feel the need to see musicians live. I don't watch live actors. I watch actors on a screen.

People are paying 1000$ for Bruce Springsteen tickets just to listen to him bash Trump between songs.

Sporting events are exorbitantly priced.

You need good weather, a beach, good food, women.

Doesn't mean that was the only supermarket...

The truth of the matter is that Jomtien is the poorman's Pattaya and populated by pensioners and the less well-off expats who will always choose cost over quality. Take a walk down any of the beer bar soi's off beach road and you will see they're all dirty, neglected and decaying with very few bar patrons. This is also the reason why there is not one decent high end restaurant.

My bad, yes you are correct.

Friendship opened in 1978.

Not sure about the beer bars, but I saw a couple of nice looking restaurants. There was a pricey Italian restaurant where the menu looked good. Maybe not as many restaurants as Pattaya, but half the restaurants in Pattaya look the same and/or run down Indian restaurants to me.

The condos appear to be better value. But saving 5K per month on rent is an extra paid vacation outside the country. Depends how you want to spend your money.

If money is no object, maybe Jomtien is not the best place to live.

No wonder that was your first post 😊 There are 'high end' restaurants around both ends of Jomtien beach.

One would wonder why the complainers are so focussed on beer bars...

It's actually "gig". As in 'side gig'. Side job.

I used to like to visit Jomtien precisely because it was a breath of fresh air from the central area of Pattaya.

Of course they've ruined that with their developments, but that's how things go, as you know.

Prefer Russian or Indian?

Recommendations is the the dark side instead.

The dark side is considered everything over the railway.

No tourists.. But you can find best Korea, Chin food here , not for tourist

Sounds as if you've never been there.

I'm sure most of Thap Phraya was just a dirt road. Places like The Residence Garden were considered on the very periphery of civilisation 😊

yeah, but that's 5 mil + villas?

and need to drive to the beach ... maybe not a long drive.

but jomtien's appeal is cheap condos walking distance to the beach.

not everyone cares about the beach or even goes.

a lot of thais never go.

No, that's a completely ignorant post. A "gik" (Thai: กิ๊ก, often spelled gik, gik, or kik) is a Thai slang term referring to a romantic or sexual partner who is more than a friend but less than an official boyfriend or girlfriend.

Wow you sound like an introvert and join the club I'm the same

Could I ask you kindly please to try to get out of the room , I saw plenty of these guys laying on their beds in the flybird condominium watching their shows on their mobile phone ,

I could actually hear if through their open door some concert they are watching

I'm not saying it's sad but what I'm saying is watching on phones etc is not the same as socialising, please try to get out more , surely that's not to much to ask for your mental health , socialise instead of laying on that bed
