No Proper Supermarket in Jomtien

No, that's a completely ignorant post. A "gik" (Thai: กิ๊ก, often spelled gik, gik, or kik) is a Thai slang term referring to a romantic or sexual partner who is more than a friend but less than an official boyfriend or girlfriend.

You can believe whatever you wish to believe. I know what it means. I was in Thailand at the time term was introduced. It's 'gig'.

A bit on the side...

I have always wondered this ! That supermarket up near the bus station is double the prices of Aldi in Australia

As I’ve posted previously on this forum, I feel I must defend the little Foodmart at the Jomtien bus station. For such a small place, it has a remarkably wide range of foods, including imported stuff

Are you sure there ever was a foodland? I know there was a large sign, but I don't think there was a shop

No wonder that was your first post 😊 There are 'high end' restaurants around both ends of Jomtien beach.

One would wonder why the complainers are so focussed on beer bars...

Haha, name one!

Sounds as if you've never been there.

Not too often because theres nothing there to make me want to go, but please feel free to tell me how and where I am getting it wrong, if you can!

The truth of the matter is that Jomtien is the poorman's Pattaya and populated by pensioners and the less well-off expats who will always choose cost over quality. Take a walk down any of the beer bar soi's off beach road and you will see they're all dirty, neglected and decaying with very few bar patrons. This is also the reason why there is not one decent high end restaurant.

It wouldn't surprise me that all the thumbs down are from the jomtien OAP brigade, try being constructive and enlighten me as to where I am incorrect.

Not sure about the beer bars, but I saw a couple of nice looking restaurants. There was a pricey Italian restaurant where the menu looked good. Maybe not as many restaurants as Pattaya, but half the restaurants in Pattaya look the same and/or run down Indian restaurants to me.

The condos appear to be better value. But saving 5K per month on rent is an extra paid vacation outside the country. Depends how you want to spend your money.

If money is no object, maybe Jomtien is not the best place to live.

Looks are all well and fine but its the food quality that counts!

Already a minus 3 in reputation for two posts. Impressive. Only bignok/harrisfan etc could achieve such status.

La Bocca(Italian). Natan's, Yupin's... are examples at one end. Personally have only eaten at La Bocca.

At the other end you have loads of upmarket places, including Japanese restaurants, Sense of the sea and a fair amount of renowned seafood restaurants. Too many to recount here.

You should visit Thailand at some point, to take a look for yourself.

This is you again ex harrisfan, isn't it? Quickfire posts and a poor reputation.

La Bocca has Italian owners and the last time I looked, a Sicilian chef.

Doesn't mean that was the only supermarket...

My bad I should have said supermarket for expats, catering for special imported products in the 1980s. It went out of business, after moving to the underground Spinneys on 2nd road, after Foodland moved in. There were of course plenty of other places to shop for Thai produce.

In practically everything that you have ever posted in your 8/9/10 usernames!

I thought he was posting under the new name of @Rockyroad Perhaps he has given up on that one already after being sussed out early. This new knob jockey certainly whiffs of Bignok/Harrisfan et al. Perhaps it's just another DHead but you could well be correct.

Either way they are all from the same mould whether they really are individuals or just the usual idiot coming back to post its usual cr@p!

How do you like Nirun Condo; I'm told it's plush.

It looks like what I imagine a prison in Pattaya would look like. That's just the outside though. The inside is....much worse!

No malls, fast food outlets, or department stores either. Jomtien is kind of a wasteland. Even Rompho market doesn't have much of a food court.

Wasteland? Hells teeth, what is wrong with you?

You judge a place on the extent of how much high priced <deleted> is an available?

Other people countering your argument, but using McDonald’s and a Burger King as proof like they are centres of excellence.

Only to people who either have no taste buds or an aversion to foreign food.

Rom Pho has no food court? So what do I sit in, a few days a week? Or does a food court need to be tiled or plastic…..

Both go pretty darn good though.

There's a huge vacant area opposite Jomtien bus station just been cleared. I heard it belongs to Big C but no idea myself

I think the price of land in Jomtien is a factor in the absence of a supermarket there. Besides the land for the supermarket there also has to be land for parking. If a proposed supermarket is limited to viably affordable land it may then have to be close to the Sukhumvit

If those are your opinion of high-end restaurants then you really need to expand your horizons, educate yourself and try some fine dinning at Peaky Blinders, The View, Gooseberry Bistro and Casa Pascal, plus several others that put the best of your tourist fleecing Jomtien restaurants to shame.
Not that it bears any relevance but I've lived in Thailand for well over 20 years so probably better qualified than you to make observations, oh and thanks for showing concern regarding my reputation! as if I give a *#^!

And your point is what? It's still a low class tourist targeting restauarant just like Da Nicolas a few doors up, both serving mediocre food at tourist prices, and keeping in vein with the thread are not frequented by the vast majority of Jomtiens aged expat community!

It's my understanding there is a restaurant at the south end of Jomtien Beach Road where members of the royal family would occasionally dine.

You know that Pascal had a restaurant in Jomtien, don't you? That's where his buffet breakfast/brunches began.

You also understand that Gooseberry is in Phra Tamnak soi 6, equally close to Jomtien. Pop down the promenade and you are there. How do you get there from Central Pattaya?

Apart from that, what makes it fine dining and the others not?

What is "fine dinning"? Is it different from fine dining? 😊

My horizons are okay. I've traversed a good part of the world and can knock up a few dishes for myself.

Are you suggesting that every village should have overly expensive restaurants before they qualify as somewhere desirable to live? Even a brain dead person could put together a better argument than your rather pathetic attempt.

If you've lived in Thailand for merely twenty years, I win. 😊

Jomtien has beach volleyball, Pattaya does not.

That's a win for Jomtien

Spouse and I used to live in Jomtien and we wondered about the lack of a 'proper supermarket' in Jomtien. With all the new condo construction that has been done, there is certainly the population to support one. Now that we are on the Darkside, we are wondering why there is not one in the Lake Mabprachan area. Lots of new construction here, and a growing population.

In my opinion, there should be a supermarket model that's somewhat bigger than Lotus's Go Fresh for areas that have enough population to support something bigger than a glorified 7-11. We have plenty of Mini Big C's, CJ's, Lotus's Go Fresh, etc. They are all about the same size and I don't see much difference between them. What would be great would be something maybe twice as big, offering a better selection of meats, fruits, and vegetables, and with a wider variety of farang food. Something like the Tops at the Chill mall would be popular, I think, at Lake Mabprachan.

In Pattaya, a quality supermarket in one that sells booze, lubrificant gel and condoms 24/7. And Yes, also medical creams sold over the counter when the STD is caught and it starts to itch in the private parts..

Don’t want to appear rude but this is one of the most trivial posts I’ve seen on here. The big open market on Thepprasit will cater for anything you want except for farang sxxt.

And that sign is still there, or at least was until very recently. A very old faded sign.

Not there as that plot of land has recently been cleared

There will be one at Jomtien long before Mabprachan gets one, while increasing it's still a very thinly populated area.
