No Proper Supermarket in Jomtien

Featured Replies

Sure you can head up to Sukhumvit Road but with the massive amount of year round expats why is Jomtien devoid of a proper supermarket like a Foodland or Big C ?

I have always wondered this ! That supermarket up near the bus station is double the prices of Aldi in Australia

As I’ve posted previously on this forum, I feel I must defend the little Foodmart at the Jomtien bus station. For such a small place, it has a remarkably wide range of foods, including imported stuff

Are you sure there ever was a foodland? I know there was a large sign, but I don't think there was a shop

Bad city planning.

Not enough demand, people go to the big Supermarkets anyway

I have to admit I moved from Jomtien to Chanthaburi 4 years ago for a job, and the plan was to return when I was ready to fully retire. Now, I'm thinking twice about that. I go to Lotus when I need to 5 minutes after 8:00 a.m. (they're fuzzy about the opening bell) and the Makro opens up at 6:00 - same thing, go there 5 minutes after opening. I'm always 1 of perhaps 6 folks in each. AND I just visited Bangkok Hospital Chanthaburi. While it doesn't have the glitter of the Pattaya branch, they are essentially copies of each other.

The push bike riding trails are just as nice, too. I can visit my friends in Jomtien every couple of months and call it good. And I won't EVEN talk about the difference in traffic!

No malls, fast food outlets, or department stores either. Jomtien is kind of a wasteland. Even Rompho market doesn't have much of a food court.

There was a Foodland on Traprasset Rd but closed long ago. I think the seasonal nature of Jomtien and the transient nature of much of the population discourages investment in such a large operation. Also, having Makro close by would also seem a deterrant.

It seems most of the population fulfil their basic shopping needs at 7-11/Tops and some of the larger versions like Lotus Fresh

Sorry---Foodland never opened

Honestly, no. I was assuming the sign signified a store at the site at some point. Somebody must know?

Read post above.. only sign, never built, therefore obviously never opened.

Relevance is zero, much like your good self.

Thankyou for your service.

if you build it they will come.

Sadly the sign never attracted any customers !

I dont know why anyone buys a condo there.

A good large supermarket that you can get to in 15 minutes is a basic necessity.

Nonsense. The city neither plans nor opens/develops supermarkets, they are all the subject of private enterprise.

Because there's nowhere available to build them, perhaps?

There is a Burger King and Pizza company on Jomtien beach road

the night market has a lot of good 'fast food' stalls ..there is also the myriad fast food motorcycle sidecars and many regular restaurants on Jomtien beach road.

Tesco, BIG C , Makro on the Sukhumvit main road.

Yeah, but it's the elite class that owns these large chains and they are all pals with govt officials. They're all billionaires anyway. Even if the supermarket didn't make as much as the one in Pattaya or wherever, it would still provide a community service and create jobs.

...apart from Burger King, McDonald's and KFC - and several of others. Where do you think a new mall or department store could be located in Jomtien?

That's a project for george georgie boy.

We're sending him out on a scouting mission.

He will report back to us soon.

There was a thread about the huge land clearing at Thappraya rd downhill.

What will happen there, if anything?

Last news was just "banana plantation" 😁

Someone waiting for the extra billion Baht offer?

This is HUGE.

Perimeter is about 1.7 km (~1 mile).

Seriously, you really think there is not a single supermarket within a 15 minute drive of Jomtien?

Small ones maybe?

I haven't spent much time there.

Lots of decent options on Sukhumvit Road

Closer to all the new construction on the beach is where it's needed.

Nice to see two brand new CJ's going up as they are > 7/11 and the coffee counter produces a superior product as well.

It's not a problem at all.

Foodmart ok for many items

Tops Dailies for beer, staples as needed

Rompho market

Tepprasit produce market wholesale prices

Big C online

Free same day delivery orders over 300

COD fine

Tops online from Central

Free next day delivery with minimum order maybe 800ish COD fine.

Pay 99 a month for unlimited same day delivery but not COD

Villa if you're rich. 100 baht delivery.

Believe or not my experience with online produce deliveries has been mostly excellent in other words they generally don't bring rotten stuff. Avocados can be more problematic but I put in commens to only send Firm ones and that has worked.

Not moving to Jomtien because of the grocery situation is dumb.

When I spend a month or two it would be good to have something. For Georgie and I as tourists it is noticeable how expensive that supermarket is, not a big deal but it is kind of a bit crappy too, though it has some nice bread. The condo I tend to stay at has a bus to Central so go there if needed. Most stuff I eat - if not going out to a restaurant or similar - I can get from the night market or other stores. But not some stuff.

No need to go to Central and schlep it home.

Tops Online same store. Free delivery available.

The one on Jomtien 2nd rd is quite nice, opened last year.

I was there once, It has covered parking for motorbike and cars.

(Facebook "We Love Jomtien").

Between Hanuman and Rompho (opposite).
