Next week a total waste, I'll be staying in every afternoon/evening

c'mon scuba, let your inner child escape from captivity and allow yourself to join in and have some of the best fun you can have as an adult, and remember how good it was to have fun as a child and NOT be embarrassed about it.

I'm in my mid 70's and absolutely love songkran here in the village. Also it shows the locals that you're not a cranky old farang that refuses to assimilate and enjoy their customs. I actually get more respect from the locals because I join in and make every effort to participate in songkran and all the other customary festivals here throughout the year.

In short, stop being such a grouch and enjoy life and EVERTHING that makes people happy.

That's nice and it should be fun if that is your thing. Nothing wrong with a big party, drinks, and water. Do you do it everyday of Songkran? How do you participate in the celebration?

For me, it is just a time to relax with people I hardly know and drink some beer. Even the harmless water throwing doesn't interest me in the least. I enjoy the celebration and the eye candy.

Only particpate when a group of lads come to visit.. week long pissed up drug taking water party... Hotel rooms right on beach road.

He asked, I answered, like thousands of members seeking and passing along information do. Nothing to do with being a know it all, as that's an assumption.

"Songkran is celebrated the same days, April 13-15, every year."

Cannot hear tone in written response, but it isn't completely missing.

For instance you have posted "Songkran is celebrated April 13-15."

That would have been simply passing on information.

But coming after the exchange that preceded it this sounded very snarky.

You haven't witnessed the few foreigners that ruin the celebration for everybody other than themselves? I find that hard to believe...

I think last year someone linked a CCTV live cam showing the craziness.

They might want to dig it up again.

Yes, which is exactly why it's never a good idea to assume about others here. This is a flat way of interacting, with no emotion or body language.

The reason I joined this forum is to interact with others here, asking for information I might need, and to help with information I have, with other foreigners as we're the minority here, and should appreciate others of our kind.

Some obviously use this as a way to flame or antagonize but I don't, as that's childish and I'm over 5 decades past childhood. Some hate others out of ignorance or prejudice but I don't. It's never a good idea to over think things. It's a forum where foreigners can relate to and help other foreigners.

Someone asked a question and I thought I would let them know about the dates, as I've been here awhile and celebrated it many times with my ex, daughter and girlfriend.

I just received a thumbs down for that post, just for listing the Songkran dates, which shows the thinking (weirdness) of some here.

Songkran is flexible. Water throwing can last 7 days. The 13 to 15th is the official date. Best thing to do is wear old clothes, keep phone and wallet at home. Go enjoy it. You only live once.

Considered good luck to be hit with water and a big part of the culture. People who don't assimilate should go home and take their cranky attitude with them. Thailand does not need them.

So what date does the Songkran festivities actually start in Pattaya? How long does it last?

Since nobody really answered you -

Water throwing probably starting in some places from today although not seen any reports other than @Ralf001 saying he was locked and loaded......

Pattaya main Wan Lai day or whatever it is called is the 19th with Naklua on the 18th. So basically every day from now to the 19th. 19th Pattaya becomes a giant car park on all the main roads and more water is wasted used then probably for the whole of April......

The 20th it is back to normal, or as normal as Pattaya is.

I know when it is as I mentioned it earlier, give or take a day or three if it's in a tourist area and Chiang Mai. I've celebrated it ever since I came here.

Maybe those who enjoy water fights every year (very repetitive) are like those people who do pranks, they have no sense of humour so do pranks to make up for it, having water fights makes people feel like they are fun, they probably aren't normally. Thought of the day

Sometimes it's best not to comment. Just for your sake, look at who I was replying to, and you'll understand why, seeing you've been here as long as I have.

It's a fun way of letting loose, acting younger, without hurting anyone as everyone is out there doing the same thing. As long as you aren't making driving unsafe for scooter and motorcycle drivers. Yes, there are people who pull pranks, and some aren't bad, while some are mean, and show how the pranksters think, in a way to hurt others disguised as that prank.

Yes, so make sure you follow me around and place thumbs down on my posts, like now, as it hurts you to have such a negative score and not understand why.

Why aren't you outside spraying water?

People can google the Songkran dates like any other festival. AI will even tell them the best places to celebrate it. AI also has the day's AQI levels in any city. So people can totally plan their Songkran fun without ever asking a human. AI is the future.

It's not Songkran yet, I'm watching The Thin Red Line with my daughter, and eating pasta. Thanks for the extra thumbs down, which you should know by now is against forum rules when placed out of spite and not because you disagree.

Enjoy the thumbs down as it hurts you so much. Not much of a man.

Did you not notice the member I answered asked what the dates were, so I gave him the information?

More of a man than you'll ever hope to be, and your habits here help to prove that point. And they don't bother me, as my reputation is a good one. I get most of my thumbs downs by trolls and those who hate Americans.

And the info you gave him is not even correct. In some cities the water sprays start early and finish late. Sooner or later people will learn to use AI for these questions.

I like American culture and you will never be a man if thumbs down hurts you. More like a girl. If you have not grown some balls by age 60 you never will.

The information I gave him was correct. Songkran's actual official days are April 13-15. The 13th being Maha Songkran, end of the year, and Wan Nao, transition day till the last day, Wan Thaloeng Sok, the New Year's Day. The times they are extended is for tourist areas and Chiang Mai, with some areas starting April 12 and ending on April 19th. The main regions of Thailand are the 13-15. This I knew before I visited here, as I was interested in Thailand since teen days.

think you are a little younger than me but I remember when that would have been fun. Wife and I will go out and party for one of the days but my type of a partying is tame and somewhat pathetic :)

I had many Songkran partys at my home over the years. Some how the family had a bust up and now it's only her indoors and myself. I don't know what happened and I don't care. It's rather strange that my wife has 2 adult daughters and they haven't spoken to their mother for 5 years. In saying that it's so peaceful now instead of when the booze was flowing freely. So where ever you are have a very happy Songkran. There used to be an add on TV where I came from during the holiday seasons " If you drink and drive then you're a bloody idiot " PS : I still see my 2 step daughters when I go shopping, if I'm alone they're very friendly towards me. My take is mum couldn't keep her mouth shut.

Still assuming through all your aliases, much like a couple others here. Try a different approach sometime, or don't you see your -343 score and wonder why that is? Like I said, it's not getting the thumbs downs that bother me, it's the reason some, like you, use them, which also doesn't bother me but actually amuses me, as it proves my points rather easily. Calling someone online a girl sure takes some balls. Not. This you'll never understand.

My best nights out in Thailand were live music in Bangkok. There's some good venues for music and some have lasted many years.
