Agreed 2024 was the hottest ever and I have been here 35+ years. It was all SEA and lasted from March 20th till early May when it finally broke. 40+ each of those days, and no wind and little night cooling. 32+ for over 20 days as the lowest temperature. This time it is cooling with breezes at night. Hopefully two or three more weeks and it will break.

You are right but for some reason it feels exceptional heat right now up here in Issan .

Key Facts about the 2024 Heatwave:

  • Hottest Province: Lampang recorded 44.2°C on April 22, 2024, making it one of the hottest spots in the country.

  • Highest Recorded Temperature: While 44.2°C was a major peak, several northern and northeastern provinces saw temperatures exceeding 43°C to 44°C during the heatwave.

  • Time Period: The most extreme heat occurred in late April (21–31 April 2024), during the peak of the hot season.

  • Other Hot Regions: Besides Lampang, other provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, and Tak were identified as high-risk areas reaching extreme temperatures.

    Bangkok Post +4

The 2024 heatwave was driven by an El Niño pattern, leading to one of the hottest April months on record.

Yes....the pedestal fans are suddenly heating you, not cooling, and even the big aircons start to struggle.

I've just rigged up water mist curtain thingy around the outside awnings......it works well, but it's difficult to avoid feeling wet most of the time and the amount of water it uses is huge....got watch that water bill...it was 120B last month.

Thanks

Maybe a tad hotter a few years back, but for some reason heat feels particularly brutal this year. Part of the problem may be that tree outside my study has no foliage and may be dying which has made the afternoon sun unbearable. Watched in disbelief my 80 yo neighbor planting manioac with no shade but from his hat all afternoon the other day. Confess I have been nursing thoughts of moving to cooler climes.

I doubt it.

No you can't. Nobody can.

And yet Weather Forecasters on telly will tell you the average to the nearest tenth of a degree.

How silly.

Now I have curtains closed, and windows open each side of the house to try (if there is any breeze) to get some flow through. I also bought a couple of 18" Hatari 5 speed pedestal fans to keep air circulating. They do a good job.

I was reading up a bit about this, to try to optimize our situation as we don’t run the AC until the evening. Look up or ask AI about “Bernoulli's Principle” - putting a fan a few feet in front of one window to draw in a higher volume of (hopefully) cooler air into the home. But:

If the air outside is not cooler at all (or is warmer), the Bernoulli/Window strategy actually becomes counterproductive.

• The Threshold: If the outside air is within a degree or two of the inside air, the fan is still useful for fresh air.

• The "Flip": If it’s hotter outside than inside, shut the window. At that point, you want to use the fan purely for internal circulation. Placing it in the window will just "entrain" hot air and pump it into your home faster.

Mission Impossible these days without AC!

Everyone should have a backup plan in case the AC stops working... or worse, the power goes out. My sister had to wait several days before her landlord finally fixed it. Those six days without air conditioning were absolute hell on earth.

In my 15 years in Isan Thailand this month has to be the hottest ever with in the shade temperatures regularly hitting 42 c along with a strong breeze that doesn't help . Now today I have read that Thailand may suffer from a super El Nino weather starting June to the end of the year . This will cause reduced rainfall, droughts and water and crop shortages in Asia including Thailand and India where the monsoons may not happen . I hope the super El Nino doesn't occur . Its keeping me house bound in an air-con room .

A fall in temperatures and maybe rain/hail , could be here this weekend.

There are hotter recordings for 2016 and 2023 but things should be a bit more comfortable by Monday, at least temporarily:

https://www.tmd.go.th/en

The return of El Nino may well include lower precipitation and the associated problems that you mention - but a total failure of the monsoon is exceedingly unlikely - if that completely fails we're all toast, so-to-speak.

The best things you might consider would be to maximize your water resource/storage capacity, perhaps create significant shade for your living spaces (including any animals) and get solar power, if you can afford it.

I turn on the aircon at its highest setting (30) at around 3 pm. As you said, if you keep moving, it isn't too bad. It did seem to get hotter quicker this year. I did give up riding my bicycle to coffee in the morning because by the time I got there, I was soaked in sweat (looked like I pissed on myself). The ponds are almost dry. In the last 15 years, they have only once gotten completely dry

Try 25, much more comfortable.

I still go through the day without aircon. I don't turn it on until 10 or 11pm. If I keep moving and doing things throughout the day, the heat doesn't seem as bad. When I sit still and there is no breeze whatsoever, that is when things feel hot.

There's always a hero !

AC is the invention of human history ! Ok Ok the wheel is handy! There are rotating bits in my AC !

This year the temperatures really depends where you live.

The North and NE of Thailand have taken the brunt of the hot weather, whilst it's been much cooler down south.
41C today in the NE, 34C Pattaya, 28C Phuket.

Thais have been advised to plant rice crops mid May, rather than the usual mid April due to expected limited rainfall.
Thai farmers are expecting a drought this year.

It depends where you live every year.

You have to be the most angry poster on Aseannow. Every post you're screaming at everybody with exclamation marks. Literally, every post you are screaming. Are you really this awful of a person in real life? You are unstable and really need to get help. Slow down and go back and read your last 20 posts. Now ask yourself, what type of person would make these posts.

Two years ago was hotter, so were 2015/2016. And this has been only a couple of weeks. I am in Surin.

It's a bit early to start talking about the year 2026. The sun is directly overhead in Bangkok on April 26 and in Pattaya on April 24. I don't remember it being this hot in 2015/2016, but there are plenty of days/weeks/months left to make records. I don't recall a hotter late February and March. Last year was the wettest I can remember, and rain will be very welcome now.

Just to simplify this a bit, if the temperature is above 35 °C, fans will blow warm air and will heat you. In most places, at the moment, the air outside will be hotter than the air inside for most of the day, unless you're living under heated concrete (top floor of a condo) or under a tin roof, and/or the sun is shining in.

2024 in the NE was MUCH hotter through March. Where do you live? April this year is almost identical to 2024 looking at my records. Today was blistering hot!

It might be the hottest. I think I read where the Thai Met said this summer could hit 60 in some spots - I've never encountered that, but I did live through 50+ in Cyprus one summer. But 40 - 45 is not unusual for parts of Thailand in March-May.

Not really, they had a little in Issarn yesterday.

Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

I learned many years ago that most of what we worry about never happens, or is less of a problem than we feared. Don't speculate, Whatever will be will be.

The Thai forecast for this summer warned of a Heat Index of 60ºC. That is a temperature and humidity combo that can not be sustained for many hours without risking death. It is literally being in a sauna.

More than fits ... this chart is from the 2nd half of my earlier comment.

HeatDuration2024.png

A temperature in the low 40s ºC with humidity above 35% can be as dangerous as / feel like 60ºC. The issue is how well our bodies can survive conditions while keeping our core body temperature around 37ºC. Healthy, young people can survive longer than older humans. As we age, we feel the heat stress sooner, at lower temperatures.

So many are so unhappy with who they are and lash out. Politics, weather, or whatever. The more they scream, the more delusional they become and many will go to their grave behaving in this manner.

I asked a few posts back why would you not use your AC if it would make life more pleasant. I wasn't being critical but I was curious. Others got angry that I questioned them. Weird...

Move to the beaches and have a swim.

Saw the forecast change between 4pm and 7pm yesterday. At 4pm, it looked like a little relief was on the way, with lows dropping into the 26s and 27s and rain on Monday. By 7pm everything had changed, including last night, with lows across the board at 29. And, yes, I can tell the difference between 27 and 29 at night. The humidity went up yesterday afternoon as well. You would think with 37 degree highs and saturated humidity you would get thunderstorms. But no, apparently there is an inversion layer of warm air sitting over Bangkok and the entire region is simply cooking.

Here is a hint,,,,,it gets hot in the Summer and cold in the Winter.

Stop blaming El Nino.

Urban heat island certainly has an effect. I've seen open forests and vast fields of elephant grass totally disappear along Borom from Sai 3 to out past Sai 5. Several malls, parking lots, 6 or 7 of those gray white Supalai Moobahns that have absolutely no landscaping and reflect vast amounts of heat back into the atmosphere, and worst of all Aksa Road has been rezoned from orchards and organic farms to more moobahns and commercial use buildings. My area is getting hotter and hotter as a result.

So the only way to deal with a power cut is either a powerful generator or air-con both of which are quite expensive . I used to leave Thailand in April but the ME war and high cost of flights has put me off .

Haven't even reached the forecast high of 36°C yet

'feels like' 108°F' for you Yanks

Nice breeze though, and not bad in the shade, as just came back from stroll at the park.
