If you, or anyone else here, gets gastritis that doesn't go away, it's the first thing to check, as it lies dormant for years and only affects about 20% of those that have it. Left unchecked, it leads to ulcers and possible cancer. It can be IBS symptoms that don't go away also.

Not trying to be a smart arse _ promise :) THat is another grifter scare tactic used over and over on the internet. Huberman and Atilla do it constantly and so many others. Yes, there is an ounce of truth to it but mostly it is a bunch of BS.

AI:

The idea that Vitamin C and carbohydrates (specifically glucose) "compete" is based on a legitimate biochemical mechanism that has been stretched into a standard "influencer" oversimplification.

Here is the breakdown of the science versus the hype.

The Mechanism: GLUT Transporters

The theory rests on the Glucose-Ascorbate Competition Theory (GACT).

  • The Science: Vitamin C (in its oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid or DHA) enters cells using the same transport "doors" as glucose—specifically the GLUT1, GLUT3, and GLUT4 transporters.

  • The Conflict: Because they share the same entrance, high levels of blood glucose can theoretically "crowd out" Vitamin C, slowing its uptake into cells.

Why It’s Usually Not a Concern

While the competition exists in a test tube or in cases of extreme hyperglycemia (uncontrolled diabetes), it is rarely a practical concern for someone with functional metabolic health for several reasons:

  • Sodium-Dependent Transporters (SVCT): Most Vitamin C is actually absorbed via SVCT1 and SVCT2 transporters, which are dedicated solely to Vitamin C and do not care about your glucose levels.

  • Affinity Levels: Cells that desperately need Vitamin C (like those in the nervous system or immune system) are highly efficient at grabbing it even when glucose is present.

  • The "Fruit Paradox": If this competition were a major health barrier, the Vitamin C in fruit (which comes packaged with fructose and glucose) would be useless. Clinical data shows that Vitamin C from fruit is highly bioavailable and effective.

The "Grifter" Angle

The "grifter" element comes into play when influencers use this biochemical factoid to push specific agendas, such as:

  1. Carnivore/Zero-Carb Extremism: Claiming you don't need Vitamin C if you don't eat carbs (False: you still need it, though your requirements might be slightly lower due to less oxidative stress).

  2. Mega-Dosing: Suggesting you need 5,000mg of Vitamin C to "overpower" the carbs you ate (False: your kidneys will just filter out the excess).

  3. Anti-Fruit Rhetoric: Suggesting the sugar in an orange "cancels out" its Vitamin C (False: that’s not how biology works).

The Verdict

For a metabolically healthy individual with stable blood sugar, the competition is a biochemical footnote, not a clinical crisis. As long as your post-prandial glucose isn't chronically red-lined, your cells are getting all the Vitamin C they need.

Unless you are treating active scurvy while simultaneously sitting on a literal mountain of glazed donuts, you can safely ignore the "competition" concerns.

Do you have a specific supplement or dietary change in mind that sparked the question?

Its hard not to consume vit c. Mass dose is like mag as it makes you crap.

Eat small amount of fruit or multi.

Who is Atilla? Atilla the Hun?

You mean Peter Attia?

Are you going to argue that pu**y is not low carb too now?

No, not going to argue with you and thanks for correcting my spelling. The other guys name is Andrew Huberman and he was huge but like attia he has had some ethical issues.

I thought Huberman's show was great at first. It seemed to be data driven but after doing some research years ago, IMO - he is full of it. His Ice bath episode with,I forgot her name, was hilariously stupid. The lady though was beautiful so maybe he got lucky afterward. I bought an ice bath to increase my odds of attracting women like her.

I think fruit has been oversold as a health food.

Locals in Thailand may have DNA that can tolerate all this tropical fruit all year round, but we weren't born in the tropics. I haven't had a mango or pineapple in months. Way too much sugar.

You can enjoy any fruit you want unless you have a high blood sugar problem, intolerance to foods on a FODMAP list or diabetes. It's easy to look up what fruits have a high sugar content you might want to limit, while others are very low, like cantaloupe, cherries, berries, avocado, grapefruit, kiwis, and watermelon. Diabetes is a real problem here with all the every meal rice eating, along with those fruits and sugar laden drinks and coffees.

Low in protein. Best not to eat too much fruit.

Huberman I find rather dull.

Fruit is one of the best things anyone can eat. You don't look at fruit for protein, as that's in meats, fish, grains and beans. Fruit is for Vitamins, minerals, anti oxidants , energy and good digestion from it's fiber.

  1. Born in London. Married and lived in Thailand for forty years. No medical problems that I'm aware of, other than what comes with old age. Out for a walk every morning at 6am and spend too much time on the internet. How long will I go on for? Who knows? 🙂

Sour, mean, rude and bitter people never live long, no matter how healthy their lifestyle is or was.

That post made me feel good. Hope you see 100+. My brother's wife's dad's funeral was yesterday and he was 104. Healthy up to the last month or two. He wasn't in extreme pain either when he passed. Just went to sleep at the hospital and didn't wake up. My brother had to get a nurse in to see him because he "claims" his wife didn't know he was dead. He had a wonderful life.

Only berries make the top ten for nutrient density but I do think coconut juice is a great drink.

God made a variety of foods, including all the fruits, so we would get all the essential nutrients and not be bored. This is why you can eat all fruits in moderation, but not too many of certain types if you have a blood sugar problem.

I'll ask him when I see him. Seeing he made all of the tasty things on earth, I'm sure he has his favorites.

I hope that meeting will not be soon for your sake.

It will make no difference to Rocky as he NEVER believes anything that TRUMP has not approved!

"How You Measure Up to Others"

Pathetic.

Basically no alcohol for over 20 years. Stopped cigs 11 or so years. Decent diet but needs improving. Walk daily. Very little stress. I try not to get angry at all. I havent really thought much about health as I dont ever get sick. Naive maybe ...but so far so good.

I like to joke and laugh as much as possible though...maybe that also plays into it all

I have already surpassed the average life expectancy of an Australian male.

What is not measured can't be controlled. I have regular blood and heart health checks.

BMI normal. ( Low carb diet ). BP normal, resting heart rate 60 bpm ( Daily exercise )

I have survived four different types of cancer.

That sounds like a a wonderful life and outlook. I also try not o get mad and that started about 10 years ago. I stumble often but far less than 10 years ago. All I can do is keep trying.

I still lose it with mean individuals and those that gather up and abuse people online. I need to just let it go but sometimes I just can't. There are some strange posters here that others like to hate on for example. I find them interesting and --- oh crap - I'm rambling.

dont spend too much time on this forum - not good for blood pressure and psychological health.
