Fears Trump Could Upstage King During High-Stakes US Visit

Concerns are mounting that Donald Trump could overshadow — or even embarrass — the British monarch during a looming state visit to the United States. Senior MPs warn the unpredictable president poses a diplomatic risk as the Royal Family steps into a fraught geopolitical moment.

With tensions rising over the Iran conflict, the visit is shaping up as a delicate test of UK-US relations.

‘High Stakes’ Warning from Westminster

Emily Thornberry has sounded the alarm, warning the president “can’t stop himself” when facing the media. She fears off-the-cuff remarks or late-night posts could derail carefully choreographed diplomacy.

The King and Queen are expected to meet Trump multiple times over four days — increasing the chances of unscripted moments in front of a global audience.

Royal Diplomacy Meets Presidential Volatility

At the heart of the concern is a clash of styles. The monarchy operates on restraint and protocol; Trump thrives on spontaneity and spectacle.

Officials are said to be wary of live press interactions, where shouted questions often prompt immediate responses. Even a single misstep could dominate headlines and undermine the visit’s purpose.

Strained Relations Add Pressure

The backdrop is already tense. Trump has openly criticised Keir Starmer over his handling of the Iran crisis, sharpening divisions between London and Washington.

The visit is intended to stabilise ties — but risks exposing those fractures instead.

Calls to Cancel — And Fears of Fallout

Ed Davey has urged the government to reconsider the trip altogether, citing Trump’s unpredictability. Critics warn the symbolic weight of the monarchy could be dragged into political controversy.

For the Royal Family, the stakes are unusually high: a misjudged moment could resonate far beyond diplomacy, testing the UK’s global standing.

A Diplomatic Tightrope

The visit also coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence, amplifying its visibility. Every word and gesture will be scrutinised.

For the King, the challenge is clear — maintain dignity and neutrality in the face of a volatile counterpart. For Downing Street, the risk is equally stark: a single headline could undo months of careful diplomacy.

Awwww, did it upset you that he showed respect to his hosts when attending a mosque? Does it offend you when he wears a kippah to visit a synagogue? And that photo was from 1996, I thought you might

Much more likely is that the traitor to Christianity, King Charles III, will embarrass Trump, as he already has millions of UK Christians.

I don't think President Trump will 'embarrass, Charles, but he might give Charles some friendly advice.

The President likes the Royal Family, not so much the idiot Starmer.

Indeed; and hopefully that advise might be along the lines of “Hey Charlie, get back in your lane, had you forgotten that you are Supreme Governor of the Church of England, not some wannabe Imam”

He might refuse to meet the King on the grounds the King's younger brother is a nonce......oh the irony.

And that photo was from 1996, I thought you might be over it by now. Or, don't tell me, you only saw it posted recently and someone told you to get all angry?

Pathetic pearl clutching.

Oh, want something more recent about this traitor to Christianity do you ?

In March 2025 King Charles III extended his "heartfelt best wishes" to Muslims in the UK and the Commonwealth for a blessed, peaceful Ramadan

Then, on 2nd April this year, he shared warm greetings for Eid al-Fitr 2026, wishing Muslims in the UK and around the world a joyous and peaceful festival. The message was posted on official Royal Family social media.

However, this Easter, he decided not to post a traditional Easter message to UK Christians on Maundy Thursday, as he had done the precious year. If you were a practising Christian in the UK, you would understand the huge significance of his treachery.

This is a dereliction of his duty as Defender of the faith, and Supreme Governor of the Church of England; it is a disgraceful shift in his allegiance to the church, and he should abdicate, taking the appalling Labour government with him.

Treachery? Looks like King Charles was busy on Maundy Thursday this year:

Unlike the annual Christmas broadcast, there is no long-standing tradition for a royal Easter address. Queen Elizabeth II, for instance, only issued one formal Easter message during her 70-year reign, which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead of a broadcast, the King focused on traditional ceremonial duties. He attended the Royal Maundy Service in person at St Asaph Cathedral in North Wales, where he distributed "Maundy money" to 77 men and 77 women in recognition of their community service.

Yep, exactly that. It seems Mr @Eloquent pilgrim is rather fast to react, and rather slow to research.

Also extremely fast to get those pearls out! Perpetually outraged.

My sense is he will be more careful than usual. But he is highly unpredictable and becoming more unhinged - maybe with age-related dementia. I notice his Canada 51st state rhetoric has toned down. I read somewhere recently that Trump wasn't aware Charles is Canada's Head of State - so maybe he toned down after learning that fact. That also likely explains why Buck House has been very careful so far - maintaining silence actually when Trump was threatening the King's biggest overseas State. They might have known.

That's now. He has been arrested on suspicion of public misconduct. Released pending further investigation.

IMO the police don't waste their time if there is nothing to see.

No. OTOH, Private Joseph Leonski was executed in Melbourne for strangling three women in 1942.

Trump is pathologically incapable of being "careful". His mouth works way faster than his thinking process. I can't wait to see the gaffes and memes and ridicule that comes of this visit.

And sure the queen didn't put her hand in the wallet and paid millions of pounds to make a case go away before it went to court.
