Bolt Licence Rejected

Featured Replies

The transcription below provides news stories from across Thailand and Southeast Asia, hosted by Alex in the Good Morning Thailand program. The stories range from Bolt’s licence rejection to Phuket streaking drama, Thailand’s US war cost concerns, risky power price cuts, and bizarre zoo crime headlines.

Bolt Is in Hot Water
Thailand is considering renewing Bolt’s ride-hailing licence after the company failed to fix driver screening issues. The move could disrupt cheaper transport options and signals stricter regulation of ride-hailing platforms.

Phuket Streaking Controversy
Police in Phuket are under fire after two naked tourists were seen walking in public without immediate arrest. The incident has sparked criticism over lenient enforcement and renewed debate on tourist behaviour.

Thailand Frustrated Over War Costs
Thailand’s foreign minister has criticised the US for not supporting the country amid rising costs linked to the ongoing war. Higher fertiliser and fuel prices are putting pressure on farmers and the wider economy.

Rural Lights Cut to Save Energy
Authorities will reduce or switch off some rural street lights starting May 1 to save energy. While officials say only low-risk areas are affected, concerns remain about safety and crime.

Electricity Bills to Drop for Some
Households using up to 200 units of electricity will benefit from a reduced rate of 3 baht per unit. The scheme aims to ease living costs and encourage rooftop solar adoption.

Romance Scam Arrests in Pattaya
Police arrested a Thai woman and three Nigerians linked to a romance scam network in Pattaya. Officers say the group used mule accounts to move stolen money through an organised operation.

Tortoise Smuggling Bust
A Taiwanese passenger was caught at Suvarnabhumi Airport with 30 tortoises hidden on her body. Authorities say the protected animals were intended for the illegal exotic pet trade.

Viral Dead Mosquito Business
A Thai TikToker is earning over 10,000 baht monthly selling keychains made from dead mosquitoes. The bizarre product has gained viral attention, especially among foreign buyers seeking unusual souvenirs.

I have to admit that ending Bolt smells kind of fishy, doesn't it? Like when political parties are abolished here. Certain "powers that be" seem to be very allergic to STRONG COMPETITION.

Bolt has work just fine for me in Bangkok.

Horrible news about Bolt.

They were much better (cheaper) than Grab.

So is Grab now basically a monopoly or is InDrive a funtioning alternative?

Bolt was much better than Grab.

We're back to the stone age of taxi hailing in Thailand. I wouldn't be surprised if Grab lost its licence in the future too. There will be nothing left but scamming "meter" taxis.

I have always used Bolt in Pattaya and Bangkok with nothing but excellent service, as has been said, to cheap for the competition , I guess.

Tried Grab but always more expensive, normal taxis in Bangkok were always a problem in tourist areas due to drivers refusing to use the meter.

It is more expensive than taxis and wait times are slow .

Bolt allowed the calling of taxis if you wanted one, so where was the problem?

With an add on fee. Cheaper to hail one. Bolt was a rip off in Bangkok. Only cheaper in small cities.

Bangkok taxis are cheap as. Go to Japan and compare the prices.

Samui and Phuket are the only rip off transport cities.

There was a Thai PBS article that showed up on a Bing search that indicated it's already decided. But it's been scrubbed. Here's the Bing blurb:

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the Land Transport Department have decided not to renew the operating license of the Bolt hail-riding platform, for allegedly failing to improve its recruitment and screening of riders within the set deadline.

Click on the link, however, and it says "No News Information Found"

Google's blocked here where I'm staying.

A bit off topic, but this is Mr John Winston Lennon at his very best, for me anyway. Better than This Boy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acWj7M0-9rY

I use Skytrain or Taxis.

What we know is Thai can be bought, easily, so an agreement will be made and Bolt continues

That works both ways. Their competition could grease the right palms and have them banished forever.

Who has the most money? Bolt or a collection of dodgy win riders?

Not horrible at all and Price is not an issue, public safety is priority.

I see lots of articles, females, very young girls, sexually assaulted, these crimes must stop.

Fix driver screening 😡

Grab...

Indrive is a thing.

They'll beat Grab on price for sure.

I bet they'll be getting flooding with new app installs soon!

Nanny state go away.

With Bolt I always paid the rider cash up country. With Grab my friend says he digitally pay the platform. That would be the killer for me. Faffing around with digital money for 40-50 baht.
