Why Can't Brits Say 'Jomtien' ?

Featured Replies

Especially Brit Youtubers consistently call it 'Jontiem'. Is it a form of dyslexia? They seem to be the only nationality that consistently screws up such a simple word.

I'm guessing British pronunciation reflects older French influence.. .?

Except this isn't pronunciation, it's scrambling the letters in the word. A Brit friend of mine used the 'shedule' pronunciation on me so I asked him which 'shool' taught him how to speak that way. He was not impressed. Also dropping the 'g' in 'length' in the belief that it makes them sound posh, when their working class roots shine like a beacon. I expect this thread will be locked soon by a British mod.

Not sure about 'posh'........Just overemphasises the lisp....!

I gotta say though, I do rather enjoy the spice and controversy of the city's pronounciation......

YouTubers are definitely not well educated, so don't expect them to set standards

And AI commentators sometimes screw up the pronunciation of many regular words on YT. Heard 'pint', the measure of beer pronounced rhyming with 'hint' yesterday.

Most youtubers can't even pronounce Pattaya correctly so dont expect to much and you won't be disappointed.

As for places like Ko Samui or any island prefixed by Ko , virtually everyone pronounces it wrong. Too much bother to learn the Thai pronounciation which is more like ' Got ' rather than Ko.

Yeah what's up with the lisp?

In Spain and Portugal lisping is considered high class.

I guess we must have royalty in America in the gay community because some like to lisp too

Maybe they're just lisping because talking normally sounds so thilly, I mean silly

And no-one pronounces the black plastic used for records correctlty, as it is written. It is VINYL, noy VYNIL.

If we’re talking pronunciation crimes, Cockburn wins by a mile. Imagine looking at the word “Cockburn” and collectively deciding, “Nah, let’s ignore a few letters and hope nobody notices.” The Cockburners have been running this scam for centuries. 😂🔥

Personally I don't give a fluck how they pronounce it

Same as Fentanyl not 'fentanol'. Must be the drugs

No guessing needed. So from where does American pronunciation get its influence?

Archie Bunker had a theory about Brits:

'They are gay.'

You know when a German pronounces it because you need an umbrella

Hua hin is also another one that seems to get about 8 different pronunciations. 🤔

Right

Even the host on

Fabulous Pattaya news.

faf

Happens everywhere. Brits using Majorca, Mallorca My-orca. Ibiza, Ibeetha. It's a mix up of Spanish pronunciation and written word.

Yanks mutilating UK place names. Especially the shires.

As for Jomtien, it's probably just picked up in hearing from other holiday makers and expats.

Leave it to the Americans to correct the pronunciation of the English’s phonics.

It’s pronounced military, not mill-a-tree.

That’s different. Dickens Cider relies on hearing it. Cockburn relies on staring directly at the letters and collectively pretending half of them aren’t there. 😂

Dickens Cider is wordplay. Cockburn is letter fraud. 🚔😂

where does American pronunciation get its influence?

Primary influence: British dialects

Secondary: Irish, Scottish, African languages

Regional contributors: Spanish, German, French, Dutch, and many more

There are dozens of minor influences, for example California Valleygirl Upspeak, similar to Australians adding a rising tone at the end of everything implying a question or doubt

The rising tone at the end of statements is called upspeak (or uptalk). In Australia, this specific pattern is deeply woven into the local dialect, formally known as the High Rising Terminal (HRT) or Australian Question Intonation (AQI)😜

I'm curious why the "t" is some words is silent. For example:

water is war-uh

bugatti is buga-ee
