Wise problems

Featured Replies

You would think after using it for around 9 years I would have got the hang of it. There just seems to be a lot of niggly (I hope that isn't a banned word) problems.

The gf messages me, she wants 1200 baht to buy some black shirts as she needs to wear black for a month. ok it is only 1200 baht. Set it up on Wise then go to the UK bank to transfer £29.14 to Wise. Do that then sit back an wait. After a while message from gf where is the money? Check, Wise says waiting for money. Check UK bank money has gone. Message gf that is is taking time. More waiting, more messages, gf is getting impatient. Send message to Wise to inquire if they have the money yet, still showing waiting for money. Said they will investigate and get back to me. Mean while I notice there is a note that £29.14 has gone to GBP????? Get fed up waiting to send another £29.14 to Wise and the transaction goes through in 5 seconds.

Did I do something wrong, what is GBP? I suppose Great Britain pound, has this somehow gone to an account. Never used Wise for banking so no idea how it works.

Just seem to be a lot of minor problems with Wise these days. I have messaged Wise but no response yet.

Sounds to me as if you sent the money to your 'Multi Currency Account' instead of pairing it with the transfer request. That will not work.

Simply send the money back to your UK bank account if you if you don't want to keep it there. There is no charge for that service.

It’s the bank sending to Wise problem. Are bank transfers usually instant in the UK? They are in Australia and Thailand but weren’t always in Australia and had a 24 hour delay.

Rather than a successful FTT it sounds like FFT, Farang Finger Trouble!

As above, I expect you'll find the funds sitting in your GBP balance.

It depends. Sometimes Wise has local money available in transfer in seconds, other times it can take up to a week, usually 5 days. Plan accordingly.

You could also opt for white. Makes much more sense in the sunshine.

Oh, tell your girlfriend to buy some reflective Velcro bands to put around her ankles or something when walking on the street in all black. Hard for drivers to see, you're just asking for someone to hit you because they didn't see you.

I wouldn't step in front of a computer vision Waymo in San Francisco or Phoenix wearing all black at night, unless I was trying to commit suicide by computer. 😜

I have on occasion had to wait a few hours for the reason you state, usually around public holidays. But never a week!

P,S. Thais mourn in black, not white.

I stopped using wise. I do wire (the day after in my account) 2 times a year whenever exchange rate is better. I can live without monthly transfers. I keep wise in case of emergency only, however there is always a delay of 3-4 days with BS excuse.

If the UK bank is using Faster Payments, and most are, then yes - effectively instant

From a Google AI search:

Processing Time: Money usually arrives within seconds, though it can occasionally take up to 2 hours.

Would agree, the money has gone into the account as GBP. For that to happen the OP must have specified his own account rather than that of the recipiant.

I do it regularly and only ever seconds, on the odd occasion maybe a minute or so.

Can't it then be transferred from the account to the recipient. I have never tried to transfer funds from Wise to Thailand so puzzled by your comment about not working.

I keep Thai Baht in my account and use that to pay lazada.

I have my pensions paid into my UK bank account. On pay day it is not unusual for my pension to go from my UK account to my Krungsri account, via Wise in 1 to 2 minutes.

I use the 'pull method' whereby my Wise account is linked to my Bank account. When I tap 'send' Wise opens my Banking App, I tap in my PIN code and tap send again. And that's it. Job done.

If you don't have funds in your Multi Currency account to cover a transfer that you have set up, the funds that you do send from your bank must go a separate Wise account. Wise monitors that account and as soon as it 'sees' the deposit, it releases the transfer. I've not used that method for quite a while now.

Was her name Noi? I've had similar issues.

Not unusual for a delay depending on the time you send it. During the week I find the transfers happen in seconds. On a weekend it can take hours.

It sounds to me like your bank transfer mistakenly went into your Wise account where you can keep money for all sorts of transactions and card purchases and cash withdrawals if you have a card. They are forever promoting this account and/or card with me, but I prefer to keep it simple by just sending money for transfers. I once did the same thinking Id transfered money to Thailand but it went into my Wise account. I'm sure that the account or a card is not a bad idea for some who travel a lot between countries. The account also pays between 3 and 4% interest which might appeal to those stupid enough to leave their money sitting in a zero interest current account.

Normally I transfer from the UK on a Thursday or Friday and all done in under a minute but last Saturday it took 8 hours . Bit of a pain if expecting a fast transfer , especially if you are short of funds .

I have found, that it's better to do one's transfers when the banks in both countries are operating.

EG, if transferring from UK, 09:00 BST is 15:00 Thai time.

IME, doing that has resulted in a near instant transfer, whereas outside banking hours it takes longer. Obviously, Saturdays are not official banking days.

And just OOI, this does not appear to be a function of the Faster Payments scheme, because I paid my UK credit card last Sunday at 16:45 and it was visible on the card website 8 minutes later. So the "cross-border" delay is due either to Wise or the Thai bank - I was using SCB at the time.

The transfers from UK to Thailand are completely automated. I always transfer my pension payments just after midnight UK time when they are credited to my UK account. That means they arrive here just after 6 or 7 am local time (depending on the time of year) 99% of the transfers come within seconds,

I don't think banking hours have anything to do with it. It's all down to whether Wise's local agencies have sufficient funds available. The only time I've had delays is when there are local public holidays.

Fair enough, I would think that local public holidays should be regarded, like weekends, as non-banking days.

But, my experience was as I quoted above. Whenever I transferred when both countries banks were open for business, it was instant. Other times there was a delay.

I was sending to SCB - are you? If not the delay might be down to which bank one uses.

I think the reason why public holidays might affect the speed of payments is because they could impede on the inflow of funds into the local agencies. Wise is a 2 way street. They pay us remitters out of funds received from business's sending payments the other way for goods and services.

Slow input results in slow output.

Haven't used Wise for > 1 year because I'd switched to using Revolut & transferring GBP to THB in the App when I felt rates were good, then sending it as & when I need to (Sometimes I just switch it back to GBP and make money on the exchange) - this week I’ve used Wise twice and each time it's been really quick.

First time I sent £2,000 from my Barclays account to my Wise account & received a notification from Wise they’d received the money before I had chance to open the Wise App, then sent this to my KBank account & noticed that as well as the question about the purpose of sending the money (I used “Personal Expenses”) it also ask you “Will you require proof of Foreign Exchange Transaction”? Which was new to me, I selected “No” and before I could open my KBank app I got a message to say the money was deposited.

Second time I was creating a Deposit in my IBKR account and noticed the option to pull the money straight from Wise so thought why not.  Moved £2,000 from my Barclays account to Wise (Again it was there instantly) and created the Deposit in IBKR, 2 minutes later I get a notification from IBKR that the money was in my account, if I do it direct from Barclays it can take a couple of hours.

That is not what I was asking. Fairly obvious the OP sent the original funds to his own GBP account. My understanding is that he could then have forwarded those funds to the recipient, but you commented that wouldn't work.

"Mean while I notice there is a note that £29.14 has gone to GBP?????"

Looks like a certain lack of understanding.

Yes, I could have worded that better. If you set up a transfer and then send the money to your Multi currency, Wise will not Automatedly link the inward transfer of funds to the requested transfer. Yes, you're correct. He could have used that money instead of sitting on his thumbs. I'm sure he's got the message now.

That is because banks all over the World shut down their computers at weekends and Bank holidays, or local Nation holidays.555

Transfers for me always take until 1pm the next WORKING day as I tick 'for long term stay', so shows as an International Transfer for Immigration purposes. If I don't specify a reason, it is usually instant.

But the new status of WISE here means that if your registered address is in Thailand, it will automatically be converted to THB. I keep some GBP in my WISE and convert it into THB when the exchange rate is better, but there again, a couple of Satang change will not make a noticeable difference to me. However it does not seem to make much difference if I send from GBP or THB account.

I cannot understand anyone who needs to transfer his Pension the day it arrives in their WISE, or other bank account.

Have you never heard the phrase: 'When your over 80 never buy green bananas'.

I always transfer my pensions as soon as they're paid out. Just in case!

There's nothing like knowing one's funds have arrived as they should have........Whether it be 'principle', 'ticking it off the to do list', being 'well organised' or 'in need'...............I think i would probably do the same..I kinda get it.......

Just in case some other hi-so kicks it and the GF needs more black shirts? 555
