Wise problems

Featured Replies

Just setting up my monthly transfer for Immigration. I have used WISE for years, but tried on Revolut.

Bht 17500 coverted from GBP cost GBP399 with WISE and GBP398 with Revolut

The Rev. transfer will be instant, WISE takes til the next day or more. Both will arrive as International Transfers.

Remitly will be only 393, but will not show as International.

May I ask which Thai bank you are transferring to?

I use Bangkok Bank and all my Wise transfers take at least 24 hours (to be fair, I have requested that all my transfers are recorded as FFT).

But, my wife uses Krungthai bank and her Wise transfers are usually instant.

It's because you request that your transactions are recorded as FFT that they aren't instant.

Your wife's transfers are from local bank to local bank.

I'm sure you may be correct, but when I pay bills (car insurance, health insurance, village fees, wine orders, etc.) into SCB and Kasikorn accounts the transfers are instant - 10 minutes or less).

Maybe payments to a third party are treated differently.

Not sure what the relation of that is with Wise transfers.

Wise has bank accounts in Thailand, so your wife makes a transfer, it will be transferred from a Thailand based Wise account to hers.

If you want your transfer to be FFT marked, Wise will have to transfer from an account of theirs outside Thailand.

Edit: I assume you refer to making payments with your Wise card or Wise account. Are they also marked as payments made from overseas?

My wife receives her GBP directly from the UK and transfers it into her Thai bank, or pays bills in Thailand - just like I do. But she doesn't use Bangkok Bank.

All are marked FFT to Kasikorn. Krungthai, I'm not sure.

She has never asked for her transfers to be marked FFT - no need.

I think you don't understand how Wise works. They have bank accounts, with a balance, in about every country in the world.

If you, or your wife, initiate a transfer from the UK you transfer your money to a Wise account in the UK. That money doesn't go anywhere from there.

Wise will use money already in one of their bank accounts in the country of the recipient to complete the transfer, so it takes seconds.

If you request that your transfer is marked as foreign fund transfer, Wise can not do that, so they have to transfer the money from one of their accounts outside Thailand. Most probably their Singapore accounts.

Correction : I actually don't think Wise has those account in different country, but they use a handling agent (don't know the correct name for that) who has those accounts in all those countries. I also believe they make use of different agencies depending on which country the recipient is located.

So how do you explain that transfers from my wife's Wise account to our joint BBL account take 24 hours+ but transfers to her own Kasikorn account are virtually instant.

Oh now you change the story, so not gonna waste any more time on you. When did you say your wife send transfers to BBL, and that they are NOT FFT marked?

Wise partner banks in Thailand are Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), and Krungthai Bank.

Bangkok Bank has been caught with major corruption, so they now do a lot of internal controls. For example block your money used for extensions for several months etc.

If Bangkok Bank is the only factor that changes the outcome of an otherwise (I presume) identical transaction, perhaps therein lies your answer. BKK is notoriously antiquated in their processes and procedures. KBank is just the opposite, perhaps with the exception of their facial recognition system, which is a total nightmare.

My experience is just the opposite. I had a Bangkok Bank account which I closed because facial recognition never worked.

It even took multiple attempts to get it registered, with the assistance of the branch staff.

Kasikorn never a problem, I don't even remove my glasses for a facescan. Same with SCB

In my long experience of using WISE to Bangkok Bank, if you tick the reason as Long Term Stay or Property purchase, it will arrive the next WORKING day at 14.05 as an FTT, International Transfer. FTT is a Bangkok Bank code and will not be shown on any other bank statement/bank book.

Last month I used Revolut, and it arrived almost instantly as an FTT. See my previous post showing there is no difference in the cost.

My WISE statements say that the transfer was directly via BangkokBank, bottom of page 2.

That is why it takes the extra day.

If you need the money today, send it yesterday 5-5-5

So you are saying that when you pay your local bills, you send it from WISE to SCB or K'korn, who then pay the bill.

Can you not pay directly from WISE?

Had several Bkk Bank accounts for years. Never been asked for a face scan, just user name and password on both PC and phone. Strange that you have to, or that I don't!

I thought BBL face scans were mandatory.......On one visit 3 years ago to bank branch, I was invited to do a face scan............My phone app always requests a face scan to change transfer/payment limits............

Used Wise to Bangkok Bank last week, arrived in seconds. Used 'for long term stay' everytime.

In fact, It used to always arrive the next day which was fine by me, but more recently it's been done in seconds.

Of course they are, as they are for transactions over 50K with EVERY bank in Thailand.

To clarify, I pay those bills directly from Wise to the vendors accounts - which are SCB and Kasikorn.

My understanding after talking to BKK recently regarding updating my bank data was that face scans are only required if you wish to set up a 50,000 payment sometime in the future and that after it is set up it is always used/required. If you say you do not intend to do transfers of 59,000 in the near future then no need for face scan setup is required.

Bangkok Bank face recognition is a pain in the xxx . Even with the help of bank staff , it took over 30 minutes to get it to work . Why not a finger print ?

A friends HSBC works instantly on F/R , so why the problem with B/BK ?

Glad to hear you found the problem is not too serious.

When I transfer money from my UK bank to my WISE GBP, there is never a question as to what it is for, or am I reading your post incorrectly.

What I like about WISE, and Revolut, is that if I use it to buy something, or send, in THB for say 5000, if there is only 3000 in there, they automatically convert some GBP into the 2000 shortfall immediately and the transaction goes through perfectly.

I must admit I need to look into how the account system works as it could be useful. Bear in mind when I started to use Transferwise ten odd years ago and it was for transfers only so never really bothered to look into how the account system worked as doing transfers UK bank to Transferwise (Wise) did everything that I needed of it. I see that they have now introduced an interest paying system.
