Most overrated bands of all time

The Doors, especially Jim Morrison.

Springsteen. Clarence Clemons was quite good though, as was Nils Lofgren, and liked him as solo artist before he joined.

Springsteen had good songs in the beginning (The River, Badlands…), but he has long become upper class and privileged, and therefore just a phony act.

Morrison's band was called Them in the early days. The others have musicians around them. Paul Simon used a lot of very talented people.

Yes. but the thread is about bands.

Guessing you never listen to him, but Bieber has some major talent. Targets a younger audience, but can't deny his talent. Same with Michael Jackson, who has an ear for talent, and picks some good talent to back him up.

His last good song was in the 90s. Just a lefty moron now. U2 had some bad material but came back with Kite and A Man and a Woman in the 2000s which were good.

Neil Young (with Crazy Horse)

David Bowie

Gary Moore

Stone Temple Pilots

Fanny (underrated)

Never liked Gary Moore.

Musical artists then. After 1995 what great ones have emerged?

Kenny Wayne Shepperd & Jonny Lang hit the blues scene around 1995. Both damn talented. Lang found Jesus, and I lost track of KWS after coming to TH.

Joe Bonamassa started out around 95, then solo after 2000. Really got noticed after EC showed up at his 2009 Royal Albert Hall show.

After I arrived TH, I didn't pay much attention to music, as most of it sucked after 2000.

"ACDC - rubbish" obviously a rock music connoisseur - NOT! 🤣🤣

Overrated or not. That's not the point. The point in todays music industry, as mentioned, is that is an agressive business model oriented venture.

Take a star like Taylor Swift. To herself she has made more money then Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd or the Stones ever could have dreamed of. Perhaps even Sir Elton's bank account cannot match Ms Taylor's.

Things have shifted and the music industry does not escape the rule. For the best ? or the worst ?

Yeah those 2 are good. Harry Manx is good too.

The Rolling Stones.

Wham!

Music is completely subjective to the listener's preference.
That said, I find:
Pink Floyd;
U2;
Red Hot Chilli Peppers; and
The Police the most overrated.

One artist that really shaped the world but really didn't do it himself was Elvis (Presley, not Costello) who, like later in the 1980's Stock, Aitken and Waterman era of endless "creation" of people to perform their hits, just performed other people's music.
I think Eminem uses a lyric along the lines of "being the first white man since Elvis Presley to use black music to make him wealthy."

Current excellent and popular lyricists and songwriters, like the aging Eminem above, include Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Adele, and Lady GaGa - whose music doesn't necessarily appeal to me - but at least they write and perform their own stuff. Albeit for a generation (or more) below me.

And it resonates with a wider crowd. The four bands I listed at the head of this diatribe just never did it for me even though their following was huge in comparison to say REM, The Cure, Joy Division, and Crowded House. Which I also don't rate.

But, hey! I like 1970s British rock, and the saccharine <deleted> of the fifties and the sixties.

The Village People - likewise

ACDC - rubbish

Ah well, it's all a question of taste.

Yours sounds like it's damaged somewhat.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers;

Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik have some great tracks, full of unique energy, complexity and subtlety, mainly thanks to John Frusciante's genius (at the time). Everything from Californication is radio-friendly rubbish.

U2.

Queen is one of the better bands. One of the top singers with a good vocal range, and one of rock's better guitarists. Excellent lyrics also.

Bon Jovi also excellent long standing band. Good vocalist and another excellent guitarist in Richie Sambora, who also made a solid solo album.

AC/DC excellent hard rock down under band, one of Australia's best.

The Beatles were overrated when they began, innovators who made a lot of fans but simple lyrics for teens. As they progressed they got better, both as musicians and lyricists. Solo even better, especially Harrison and McCartney.

Coldplay pretty bland.

Doors were very good in that style, Morrison a good lyricist and emotional singer. The band solid musicians but not extraordinary.

Metallica very good band, but there are others as good or better in that genre. Armored Saint, Savatage, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, but for basic thrash Metallica is pretty up there.

Gary Moore one of the top blues rock guitarists ever.

REM- blah.

The Cure-kinda blah

I will take your word for it. I don't mean that in a disparaging way.
Most of my post-adult exposure to music is via the radio and what covers bands played at nightclubs in the 1980s and 1990s - obviously popular ones like RHCP, Nirvana, Live, even C&C Music Factory and Dee-Lite had their songs played.
So, yes, "radio-friendly" is pretty much my thing.
Oh! And having a brother eight years older who loved Pink Floyd, Elton, Bowie, Purple, Sabbath, Police, Yes, BTO, and so on.

I'm not putting S on othr people's taste, just the OP wanted to know what we thought were over-rated.

And some, like U2, Tears for Fears, Gabriel-era Genesis, and other prog-rock just doesn't work for me.

Also, while I'm here, while they are MASSIVE, AC/DC pretty much have re-written/re-arranged the same four or five songs for forty years are are fanTAStic! LOL

I'd say Megadeth is better than Metallica if "basic trash" is the criteria. They stayed true to their roots and did great stuff in the 80s and 90s, driven by Dave Mustaine who was initially fired from… Metallica!

LInda Ronstadt said of the Doors in th early LA rock days:

Great band. They should get a new lead singer.

AC/DC's Bon Scott period was great. Check out their live album If You Want Blood You've Got It. Classic masterpiece.

Why would I "want blood" though?

Why would I want to go "on a highway to hell?"

The lyrics of some of these bands are crazy.

And a lot of the music represents "rebelliousness", but how do kids who listen to this music rebel besides using drugs? Is that rebellion?

It's excusable for teens maybe , but grown middle-aged men listening to crazy lyrics is silly. Grow up and grow out of it. And not

Instead of "a highway to hell", why don't you go "Into the Mystic?"

ACDC literally has a song called "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution".

But that's exactly what their music is.

Queensrÿche top them both.

I hardly ever listen to them anymore.

However, Freddy Mercury had one of the most unique and talented voices ever.

He was practically an opera singer with incredible vocal range and drama in his singing.

Pretty close in sound, with Mustaine following the sound.
