Wise accounts upcoming changes

Visa and proof of address are two different things.

Anyway, it seems that contrary to what Wise previously said (the email would be sent sometime in June), the email requesting additional information will be sent only after the changes have been completed, meaning after August 3rd.

Currencies& Foreign Exchange

Agreed they are different things they could request either neither or both nobody really knows.

Most of us don't 'officially' reside in Thailand, so no emails and no changes.

  • I would be quaking in my boots right now if I were reliant solely on Wise for correctly-coded monthly ฿65k retirement extension transfers - which, thankfully, I'm not.

Wise have clearly expended a considerable amount of time, money and effort in creating 'Wise Ltd (Thailand)'. An entity which will come into being (officially) on the 3rd August. So you seem to think

I'd guess they'll request whatever is missing, what they don't have yet.

For example in my case, they already got my passport for proof of ID and my Thai driving license for proof of address when I opened my Wise account, but they didn't ask for my Thai visa (extension). So I'd guess they'll ask for this next, to close that gap.

i don't think you were specifically targeted. My suspicion is there may be some degree of random checks, and also checks to see where you transfer funds with Wise which may raise a flag?

I have an International Wise (I use my Germany address where i typically stay for 6 weeks or so per year) that I still retain. I do NOT (as of yet) use Wise very much for fund transfer to Thailand. i do use Wise for transfer of funds internal to Europe - and I use my Wise debit card for payments in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, UK, Ireland and other locations when travelling.

A couple of years back Wise sent to me a bunch of questions for proof of my income source and questions as to whom I was sending money to. I contacted Wise directly, confirmed that the Wise request was not a scam, and I then provided proof of my European income, proof of my Canadian income, an explanation as to what Australian remittances were (they are payments to me from a friend paying back a personal loan), ... and I provided an explanation as to whom & why I was regularly transferring money to (in Ukraine, for example).

That seemed to satisfy them then.

That was the long version to you not being targeted in Isolation.

In short, I do not think you were targeted in isolation. Most of us likely never bother posting about such.

I just received rather concerning information from Wise, after asking for confirmation.

I quote: "the emails requesting additional verification documents are being sent between 22 June and 2 August 2026"

Then this: "However, please note that the migration takes effect on 3 August 2026, and accounts that haven't completed the verification by then will be temporarily suspended".

This is ridiculous.

We are 2 weeks away from the deadline and might not receive the email for another week or more, and yet we are supposed to have submitted the requested documents by August 3rd, or our accounts will be suspended!

if i remember correctly

all currency amounts will be Auto converted to THB on August 3rd.

then we can restart the account with converting to other currency if required.

"For customers who signed up for Wise before 21 January 2026, the following changes will come into effect starting 3 August 2026. For customers who signed up for Wise after 21 January 2026, these changes are being rolled out progressively and will take effect by June 2026. "

I'm sure this will be a smooth process or maybe NOT

I'm sure I read elsewhere that the fact they have converted your funds to THB means the money will be treated as remitted to Thailand and so may be liable for tax.

I only use Wise for the occasional Xfer (Mainly use Revolut nowadays) so don't keep a balance on there but if I did, it would be this that I'd be most concerned about.

It is concerning just asked them about this and they replied 'you'll have enough time to complete your verification before it affects your account'.They will lose some customers over this I think.

Or probably not.

The fact that Wise has not been able to already send these emails with the requests, even though it has known for months that the changes are coming on August 3rd, shows that it is not able to manage the transition smoothly.

Why haven't these emails been sent 2 or 3 months ago?

And why punish the account holders with a suspension for Wise incompetence?

For what it may be worth, they gave me a month's notice of their intention to close my account last October, whereupon I had a final hurrah with them by transferring across a sizeable chunk of money from the UK before making a pre-emptive strike by closing my account myself!tongue

In fairness, we don't know the timeline for suspension yet, and their review process ifor uploaded documents is usually very quick. I think there's hope that it will be straightforward to close any gaps in documentation once requested, but I don't understand why they didn't send out those requests in June either.

Depends on the sources of the funds being remitted in this way as to whether they are deemed to be assessable income and hence liable to tax by the TRD (having regard to relevant DTA's), I would have thought.

Not to be pedantic but all remitted funds are "Assessable Income"....

"Assessable is an adjective meaning capable of being judged, evaluated, or estimated (such as valuing an asset or measuring performance). It frequently appears in finance and taxation to describe income or property subject to evaluation for taxes, and in education to describe work or skills that can be graded".

It's the assessment of the source of the funds that determines whether it's Taxable or not.

I once asked a guy who had been living in Thailand for almost 20 years "What he liked about LOS"

and he replied

" I can tell you what i dont like "

Actually, according to Wise who confirmed it twice after I asked, the suspension will come automatically on August 3rd if the requested documents have not been provided.

Instead of "send your documents before this date or your account will be suspended", it is going to be "all accounts will be automatically suspended on August 3rd, and unsuspended one by one once the documents have been provided".

Once again we have to deal with a system set to create problems instead of avoiding them.

Having said that, it seems that no one, at least among those following this thread has yet received the expected email from Wise...

I’m betting money that since a Thailand based company is now the 51% owner of the Thai based Wise, you will be required to produce a letter from immigration stating you live in Thailand legally. It will be the same as opening a bank account in Thailand, with the endless paperwork, visits to immigration and nonsensical requests and requirements to verify you. And just a thought, since Thailand does not have PCI international standard security in their data laws, get ready to have your banking data exposed, both Thai and your home country bank.

The question is: do they accept a proof of address written in Thai, because on most documents, including a yellow book (tabian baan) the address is never written in English.

You can request a bank statement in English. My friend did this when he renewed his UK passport, and they wanted proof of address.

I messaged Wise few weeks ago, they confirmed they will accept documents in Thai.

Pink ID and yellow book is on the list of wise will accept of proof of residency.

So it looks like Wise are prioritising laying the ground for the suspension of all accounts over issuing emails setting out pre-emptively what is needed to maintain them! Thank goodness I no longer have any dealings with this shambolic organisation.

Wise has delayed its upcoming account changes in Thailand.

The changes were originally due to begin on 3 August 2026, including moving customers to a new agreement with Wise Payments (Thailand) Limited. For now, customers can continue using Wise as usual.

From 15 September 2026, Wise will begin asking customers to complete an additional verification step. Account transfers to Wise Payments (Thailand) Limited will then start from 19 October 2026 onwards.

Wise will email each customer with verification instructions and confirm the exact date their new Customer Agreement will begin.

Yes, I also received the email a few minutes ago.

Simple question. If you have a choice between opening a WISE account in the UK AND Thailand, is there any preference and why?

My view, open your Wise to have a UK address.

My understanding, if you open to have a Thailand address in the account, and if you decide to transfer non-Thai currency money into Wise, then in the case of a Thailand address, that money is automatically converted to Thai baht. You have no choice. So this might cost you more money if you wish to use your Wise account outside of Thailand.

Lets say you wish to travel to Australia and New Zealand. Lets say you wish to use your Wise account/debit card during those travels. And further lets say, you are funding this travel based on your money in the UK.

If you have a UK Wise address, you can transfer the UK pounds money to wise to be Australian (or New Zealand) dollars, and pay 1 currency conversion - pounds to Aus/NZ Dollars.

But if you have a Thai Wise address, when you transfer the UK pounds money to Wise, it won't go to Australian (nor New Zealand) dollars direct. Instead it is converted from UK pounds to Thai baht, and then converted to Australian (or New Zealand) dollars. So this costs you more money, as you end up paying the fee fort two currency conversions, and not just one.

There also may be additional Thailand taxation tracking with a Thai Wise address ... which may bother or worry some.

At least that is my understanding. Hopefully other chime in and correct me if I have this wrong.

This delay in sending e-mails may instead be due to what's mentioned in the comment quoted below.

Are you referring here to what counts as "remitting THB to Thailand" (and therefore possibly be considered taxable income)?

I'm not sure I understand any of this. I use Wise Australia solely to change Australian dollars in Australia to Thai baht and then transfer the baht to my BKKBank here in Thailand for daily living expenses. That's all I do. Nothing fancy, no movements of baht out of Thailand or any other funny buggers.

I feel quite uncomfortable about having prospectively to deal with a Thai company for this. I take it I will have to send my Australian dollars to Wise in Thailand for them to make the change to baht & then pay those baht into my BKKBank account. How will I do that? I have no wish to deal with my Australian bank (NAB) on this - they will charge me like a wounded bull for the privilege.

Have I understood the prospective process correctly? And what are my non-Wise alternatives - quick, efficient & cheap?

No change, I imagine.

You will log on to WISE as you do currently. Enter the transfer amount and confirm your details (as held on file). A link on the page will take you to your bank as usual.

I'm not anticipating any changes to the bank to bank transfers.

Thanks. Hope you're right! Fingers crossed.

(When you start thinking about these things you realize how fragile is the piece of string that ties you to the only source of your income in another country.)

Yes, there is speculation, arguably unwarranted, that any foreign funds transferred to a Thailand address Wise, could be deemed by Thai RD as funds remitted to Thailand, and hence potentially subject to Thailand tax, where perhaps special effort is then required (if ever audited) to prove funds not assessable for Thailand taxation.

One of the fears, if one only intended (using my previous example) to tranfer funds from UK pounds to Australian (or NZ dollars) , but because one's Wise address is a Thai address, and because the funds were required to first go though Thai baht, it could be considered funds remitted funds to Thailand, even thou the funds were never intended to Thaiiland. And if remitted to Thailand, it may (or may not) be considered assessable funds for Thai taxation.

I see this possibility as speculation, and possibly an unwarranted fear, but possibly not. Frankly - I don't know - but I believe it is something one should ponder and make their own decision as to their approach.

The issue with that is that you have twice an exchange with all fees included
