The external charger isn’t really a charger at all, it’s just a switching relay that tells the car it can begin charging and the capabilities of the device.

Why would the buyer of the car pay a third party installer if BYD provides it all for free?

True the Tesla Model S (same price range as the Jaguar XK8, approx. 3.6 million baht) looks better than the Dolphin, but it really doesn't look that different from my Mazda 2 which cost me a mere 600,000 baht…

EVs lack personality IMO. No distinguishing features, nothing exciting about them.

.............in fairness though, BMWs and Mercs for example, used to look amazing, really stand out and ooze character in the 70's and 80's, even early 90's...the motor industry has become sooh generic................ Fat chance of expressing oneself anymore..............

I agree that cars in general have become dull and generic… but EVs have exacerbated this trend. I mean come on, who in their right mind willingly drives a car called Dolphin… 😂 (to the Dolphin drivers, just joshing).

Very often, the official installer says it’s not safe to install the charger, and the main PEA meter needs changing or the wires from the meter.

That is when people start to do their own thing….

I’ve had the XKR in the photo in 2002 and bought my youngest daughter the Dolphin at Xmas when they were a ridiculous 450k THB.

The Dolphin is an amazing car, fabulous to drive. Usually small cars are noisy, especially engine noise. The Dolphin has large wheels too. I was so impressed I kicked myself for not buying 2.

The XKR convertible was also unusual. The driving position was too high, the supercharger whine was great and it changed gear with a click, instantly one gear to the next. It didn’t feel all that quick, but it was very quick.

Oh, I had you down as more of a, C5 , EV type of guy.

As I recall, electrical fires were pretty common in Thailand long before EVs were a thing.

I actually went the other way round.

I was very unimpressed by the 3rd party installer sent round by BYD and so I engaged my own electrical company to install the charger.

But the company I used was reputable and run by a farang who I know via my daughters school and who was on site the whole time.

His company also installed my solar panels and batteries for my hybrid solar system.

I’m not sure why you say that. It’s not something I have ever come across in China. Do you have any proven examples?
