US diplomat Daniel Riva was found dead in Myanmar in May 2026 in what authorities are treating as a suspected murder case involving his Thai ex-wife. Riva, aged 43, was found with fatal stab wounds to the head and neck. The site is located close to the US Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. Authorities have not released a full forensic report and independent verification has been limited due to restricted media access in the country.

The suspect is Pavinee Supasirivisan, a Thai national and former spouse of Riva. She who previously worked as a pastry chef and reportedly studied at a culinary school in Bangkok. She was initially detained on immigration-related matters before being formally charged with murder. Under Myanmar law, the charge could carry penalties ranging from long-term imprisonment to the death penalty.

Court reports indicate she has appeared in Yangon court for preliminary hearings focused on immigration violations, while the murder charge is being handled separately. Officials have not confirmed whether she has entered a plea.

US Diplomat. It took a month before anyone announced his name. Is that because he was a spook, or was there some other reason. Strange that it would take the embassy a month to identify one of their own.
He served as a US Diplomatic Security Service officer. So did he ever have any conflicts with the junta? Probably more that likely.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out his ex-wife got framed by someone.

We may never know the entire, true story. That is, not until the book comes out.

Maybe I've watched too many Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible movies, but I doubt we'll ever know what really happened without CCTV. And nowadays, can you even believe CCTV? Yesterday, I saw a video of Rubio punching out Hegseth.

I hope the wife gets a fair trial, and the results match her guilt or innocence. But I'm cynical.

OK, so what was the motive and who did it? Pixies?

RIP but he was not a diplomat. He was with the DSS. This means he provided executive protection for ambassadors and other highly placed personnel at embassies and/or consulates. DSS personnel receive tactical training including the use of firearms, edge weapons and tactical convoy operation in hostile areas. Knew some DSS personnel while deployed to A-stan. I was impressed with them.

Not so sure he was a close protection officer. Maybe not his main job. The experience he had (see below) suggested he was more like a hands on intel gathering operative. Whether CIA or not we'll never know. But I agree it's fishy about the "former" wife killing him.

Staff and status, yes but DSS does not issue visa's or any other duties that a consular officer would carry out. They support and enable diplomatic staff to perform their duties. DSS members carry the black US passports.
