Here's a criticism of the match from a Facebook Tweet.

Spain's style of play shouldn't even be alllowed. They're grinding the game down to a halt.

  • Another fun trump bashing thread coming up ... woo hoo Instead, maybe people can focus on why the match was so boring and how FIFA can change the rules of the game to prevent such god awful eventless

  • Not boring. It was a defensive masterpiece by Spain.

  • What is the saying “ awkward is as Trump does “. Did anyone expect anything different ??

Yes, one reason.

And another reason is the highly defensive style of the other team.

But who in their right mind wants to pay 1000 dollars to see the entire match being played in the neutral zone and no goals scored?

Messi barely touched the ball at all. One of the greatest players ever. Makes no sense.

Most of the US does not like the sport. You might gain a larger market by tweaking the rules a bit. I know the sport is your religion and it sounds sacrilegious , but who says you can't change the rules a bit to make it more exciting?

The reason Messi barely touched the ball was threefold: Spain marshalled him well, they cut off the supply to him and, most importantly, Messi 2026 is not as good as Messi 2016. Still is a great player but unable to grab a game by the scuff of the neck as he used to do. Same for Ronaldo, even more so. Age catches up with all of us.

If you mean the idea never to have another half time show again, I completely agree.

A pop star past her peak with two footballers - dressed as the Tellytubbies - past their peak. What could be more entertaining?

I forgot to say, Argentina yesterday was a shame for football, everybody says that Spain saved football, and second, I hope World cup will never come back to USA, it's not an American game

half time is 15 minutes, and no refreshing time,

I admit the final was not beautiful, but it's Argentina's fault ; to see action and exciting show, look at rugby , it goes most faster

American are proud of their base ball and american rugby, but why it's popular only in two countries ( USA and Japan ) ?. real football is popular in more than 200 countries, all over the world

any body has an explanation ? As for me, I am European and I don't understand base ball and american rugby

American football requires expensive equipment -- ie the protective gear.

Baseball also to some extent. Every player needs a glove, baseball bats. Not very expensive equipment, but some costs incurred. Football requires just the ball. Some poor kids in Brazil even play barefoot. It's the most accessible sport.

there may be other reasons, but that's the main one. It got popular everywhere and it stuck because it has a history. Kids identify with past stars who represented their country.

It's hard to introduce a new sport with no heroes.

I couldn't explain cricket to save my life.

Baseball is popular in parts of Latin America as well.

I see the World Cup halftime fiasco as another crass symptom of Trumpian America.

Perhaps the USA rebounds from such insanity. I could happen.

The trend in the USA is more towards soccer with young people.

I wouldn't say never again but yeah give it a long break.

The final itself was among the most dreary matches you could ever hope to watch.

A true lowlight.

Imagine how people that paid to be there feel about that.

But there were many super exciting matches leading up to it, and Argentina's come from behind wins were a highlight.

around the world the same feeling abut the grifter, he really didn't want to leave, for somebody that banned any and all trade with Spain a couple weeks ago his actions really contradict his position, it appears he loved Spain as he didn't want to leave, the narcissist puled the same stunt while presenting the trophy to Chelsea last year 😄😄

Trump pulled a similar stunt at the FIFA Club World Cup championship last summer, standing with Chelsea as they hoisted the trophy:

I didn't see any.

I saw three people disagreeing with an automatic defence of Trump and who clearly doesn't understand what the issue is.

i love it.

some folks are so demented by trump that everything in their lives is about him.

me, i was finally figuring out why spain without any superstars* is so good and enjoying the spectacle.

but thats because i have a life

*i was not super impressed with yamal. at his age messi, mbappe, roony, cr7 and bellingham were all better. plus yamal plays in spain where they are not very tough. o sorry, none of you were thinking of that.....

you were thinking of what trump was doing in the vip box, how he got there, what he was wearing, who he was with, what did he say, who did he wave too, did he fart, where did he stand on the podium, what hand did he use to give out medals, did he wash after wiping, which player showed the courage to confront the most evil creature in the history of the universe, did he stumble, is he sick, he looked demented, why didnt melania show him affection.......

Neutral zone is passing the ball endlessly in the middle of the pitch just to keep possession.

You're leaving out 50 to 150 million potential new spectators. Think about it, at least.

Or think about how many millions would become disenfranchised with Football if we continued with the advert breaks and half time horror show, there is plenty wrong with the game without making it worse by adopting ideas just for an American public who just don't understand the game (not all).

Yeah, the purists will fight to the death to insist that the game is fine as it is.

But there are way too many low-scoring matches. And then often decided by penalty kicks, which is a completely unfair system to decide a match.

i found all the matches enjoyable. the hydration break gave me a chance to grab a snack or pee. i like extra time, gives me more match for my buck.

There is no American rugby lol

I know, but the ball is ovale and they play with hands and foot , like rugby , it was a joke

A lot of people are drones.

They just watch what everyone else is watching.

But all sports can be boring at times.

And the final match in a major tournament isn't necessarily the best one.

This has happened frequently in the Super Bowl finals.

A bit silly to travel and spend thousands of dollars for a crappy match.

Better to watch on TV.

Unless you're Mick Jagger and you have all the money in the world. What else should he be doing?

In reply to your last sentence/ question

Making his next album of course!

Regarding the camera frequently panning the spectators' faces, digging out the celebrities, that started to get my goat.

I want to watch the football, not gawp at some has-been.

Mick is an exception, of course. Loved that recent long interview with him, insights into the psychology of a frontman for one of the top bands for the last 60 years plus.

Nothing wrong with low scoring games. Do you think games are only fun if it can be 87-79 at the end like basketball? One of the most pointless games there is. Dum dum dum, basket! Dum dum dum, basket! Rinse and repeat until one team doesn't get time to score at the end. Pointless and boring really.

The game can be tactical which in itself is interesting. You just don't understand it which is fine, but don't try and tell the billions of people who do understand it that low scoring matches are wrong. I would rather see an exciting evenly balanced 0-0 or 1-1 than a boring 6-0. I guess you would take the goals as it means bigger numbers so it must be better.

Let's leave the game as is but let's just tell Americans a goal is worth 30 points so then you'll be happy. Imagine games that ended 60-60?? Wow!!! There could even be music after each goal just like there was in the World Cup (which is HORRIBLE) but it would be worth 30 points!! Woooooooah.

And hardly any games are decided on penalty kicks. We're ok with draws - a draw can be an excellent result - only in knockout tournaments can penalties come in to play.

I guess you don't understand chess either.

Edited by josephbloggs

Boring game? What do you expect? Thugs vs. artists was the final. Argentina should be banned from the next WC for bringing the game into disrepute.

Spain, though, gave a masterclass against both France and Argentina. Levels above both. Thankfully, the best team in the tournament won the cup at the end. Argentina pinching the final at the death would have been a travesty. It would have sent the message that the way to stymie practitioners of beautiful football is to kick, punch and dive.

Added: Nice subtext too. Spain's led by an unabashed pro-Palestinian anti-genocide PM, while Argentina's president is a Zionist oaf.

I'm not a big basketball fan either.

3 World Cup finals have been decided by penalty kicks. This recent snoozefest almost was. That's a flaw in the game.

One guy proposed to FIFA doing extra time removing a couple of players from each team to make it easier to score rather than penalty kicks. FIFA never got back to him.

Yeah, I missed that interview.

Did he begin the interview with "Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm a man of wealth and taste."

Did he explain how come he knows so much about "the devil"?

Yep, the World Cup is not the only tournament you know, as I said penalties are hardly ever used in football in the overall scheme of things. Penalties add incredible tension. They are not ideal but they tried the "golden goal" before which was dreadful and made the games even worse and much more defensive.

Taking players off is also a terrible idea so I am glad it was ignored. After 120 minutes of football they are all absolutely knackered, usually players are cramping up. You want them to have to run more? It would be a joke and would undoubtedly lead to injuries. The game gradually getting slower and slower and slower. And then what? Take two more off so you have seven players on a full sized pitch? Where would it end? It's a terrible idea.

120 minutes is about as long as top class athletes can play effectively.

Just say you don't like football, that's fine. But it isn't broken, it works just fine for most of the globe. We don't need your ridiculous ideas to "fix" it.

Spanish media have since airbrushed Trump out of the group photo..

Again, I ask, have they dispensed with the head bunt goal scoring or the goalkeeper fumbling a ball by hand into the net? I recently saw a goal scored by a ref who couldn't get out of the way.

AFL is the only football game I know of where a goal has to be scored by a direct kick.

Regarding the moron standing in front of the celebrations, I believe Spain has already photo shopped him out of the official pics.

Regarding Melania many opine that she was a body double. Her face did look a bit different to me.
