In my monthly flights to/from BKK over the past 3+ years, I've found a notice taped to my checked bags that BKK security has opened my bag for inspection. It's happened 3 or 4 times, so maybe 10% of the flights.

So this isn't a new policy.

And I don't disagree with the policy since travelers pack things like (flammable) power banks and cigarette lighters.

To the guy claiming above that he packed his laptop, he's lucky it was still there when he landed. Nothing with a battery is allowed any longer in checked bags.

If you take the number of flights in and out of Thailand since that first instance you dragged up from a BBC archive, the percentage of passengers passing through Thai airports who have had their checked bags interfered with is MINISCULE.

By your own admission, it has never happened to you despite you claiming more air miles than me. Maybe your overall distrust of the locals is shading your opinion more than reality.

No argument from me on the stats.

Simply stating this policy now makes it easier for thieving staff and corrupt officials to do the wrong thing.
