A British man sentenced in his absence for child rape is believed to be hiding in Thailand and could be eligible in the future, for early release if police locate him, according to his victim.

Brian Green, 76, was sentenced to 22 years at Leeds Crown Court in 2024 after being convicted of five counts of rape. He had fled after being granted bail before his trial and has not served any part of the sentence.

The victim, whom Green abused between the ages of nine and 13, has been told that he may now be released early once apprehended. Green is thought to be in Thailand, although the report does not say where in the country he may be staying.

Victim says notification was not justice

The victim said liaison officers recently contacted her about developments in the case. She initially believed the message meant Green had been found.

"I got an email with the subject 'Developments' and thought 'they've got him'," she told UK reporters.

"But it read, 'I have to tell you once he's apprehended, he will be eligible to be let out early'. This is not justice. How can this be right?"

Under the new Sentencing Act, serious sex offenders such as Green currently serve two-thirds of their prison sentence. The report said they could instead become eligible for release after serving half their term under Labour's prison early-release arrangements.

New PM, Andy Burnham recently paused Labour's prison early-release scheme following public anger over the release from prison of the killers of PC Andrew Harper.

There is no suggestion Green has been arrested in Thailand or that he has been confirmed to be in any particular province, town or tourist destination.

The early-release bit is a hook. The new govt has said it won't move ahead with that.

That said, I'd favour early release for all nonviolent offenders. Have to give them another chance. Repeat offenders, slam 'em.

Well at least his mug shot has not been pixilated. Surley Thai Immigration can verify if he is in the country with their security protocals.

They thought he might be in Thailand in 2024 when he was sentenced. Would be interesting to hear what efforts have been made since then to locate and extradite him, if any.

absconders on bail travelling overseas seems common place these days. Can't see how a reduced sentence would apply prior to a court hearing and sentence

Am I getting this right: he fled bail, never served any part of his sentence and now elegible for early release? How does he qualify for early prison release program after 5 rapes and never serving time ? Which alternate universe is UK living in?

Can't be too difficult.

Surely the UK foreign office can supply the Thai Police with his fingerprints and photo for facial recognition. Even if he has adopted a new identity, the fingerprints and facial recognition will be match up with his new name and passport.

Then, if in Thailand, Interpol warrant, TM30, bank account transaction, sim cards / phone towers etc etc and then a raid and arrest.

If he's in Thailand, they could have him in custody in a matter of hours.

They are talking about early release from prison ,when he has not even been in prison,

find him lock him up and throw away the key , these type of people never change ,he is

most likely doing the same thing now wherever he is ,

My thoughts too- such a serious charge I would have thought would mean being remanded in custody
