I'm having a hard time believing this sign is real. Why would a restaurant owner display the fact that he/she pays such a low wage that it is up to you the customer to make up the difference? Pretty sure most people in the U.S. would move along to a different restaurant.

That being said many of the card processing machines all now have a screen that says tip, i.e. using my debit card to get a cup of coffee. The staff turned, poured coffee into a cup, handed it to me. Tip? Not when that big coffee cost me $3.50US, not going to happen.

That's my point. It's already included in the bill, as it should be - and as the staff wages should also be. You wouldn't expect to get a separate bill for electricity and rent - on top of the price of the meal. Just as you shouldn't need to pay separately for "service".

I certainly would not go in that restaurant with that sign out front. If I did not see the sign until I was paying, would tip zero.

A lot of the fast-food places are dropping the tip-screens.

Tipping is meritocratic. That's why so many cultures are against it.

It is being made non-meritocratic in the US now, that's why many Americans are turning against it.

It’s common in Thailand for tips to be split across all the staff, kitchen included sometimes the owner too.

That makes it difficult to tip an individual for good service, sometimes I will ask for the servers promptpay and send them a tip directly.

It’s also common for the server to be charged for a meal if the customer doesn’t accept it. If a server brings the wrong meal to someone in my party, if they want to send it back then I take it and have it put on my bill.

I don´t have a clue why people like you have to take this more far than it is. The sign with excessive tip is just derailing the real thing. You are not paying anything extra, and you are not paying for the staffs salary. Tip is like it´s always been. It´s a standard way of showing your appreciation of the food, drinks and service combined.

Today, a lot of losers, just feel the need to complain about everything possible on this planet! Just get a grip! All this complaining is ridiculous, and belongs in diaper stage of human evolution.

I know many people who chose to work a job (i.e. restaurant workers, school teachers) that didn't pay enough to cover their expenses. Rather than whine about low tips, they went out and got a second job. Hopefully only temporarily, as they work towards establishing a dependable career. Serving tables or flipping burgers at McDonalds is not a career.

Obviously, an AI created poster. Simple search will tell average waiter/waitress wage is $15-18/hr. and thanks to Trump there is no tax on tips.

I've seen it a few times. Few smaller independent shops around tourist zones. Two bills came out ... one for locals had no VAT when we got up to check. Tourist one had a VAT charge added. Yes there was signage tucked away in the corner.

When we asked for a VAT reciept none could be provided. So whilst it's a small charge it does leave a sour taste.

Furthermore the obligatory 10% service charge is wrong. What is this for ? If i get a buffet why should i continue to pay for a service charge.

JUST ADD THE FEES INTO THE MENU. It's the Americanisation of misleading a slightly cheaper menu.

I usually tip something in Thailand, whether it's for restaurant food or my Bolt taxi ride. I don't tip anything at the grocery store or at the convenience store. And yes, the tips often go into a pool to be divided among all the staff.

I guess it's just a matter of habit for me, as I'm from the US.

The whole touch screen thing has gotten out of control in the US. For example, you walk up to the counter in a fast food place to order some take out food. A sandwich, let's say. A place where you'd never usually tip, as they aren't doing anything other tan taking your order. They flip a screen around for you to pay, which includes several choices for tips, starting at 20%. And you're almost afraid not to tip, lest they sabotage your food. Although one place I used to go, Firehouse Subs, used to allow you to "round up" the payment to the nearest dollar, for a contribution to charity. I thought that was OK. A few extra cents for a good cause.

I've seen exactly the same thing many times where they spin the iPad touch screen your way and in bold text it asks for a tip or to round up to the nearest dollar.
