Canada can replace the finished goods that the USA sells it, with replacements from Asia and the EU. The USA cannot replace the low cost natural resources Canada provides.

Tariff financial services including US insurers, investment funds, and accounting firms. Tax electronic media just as other media is taxed. The US insurers and funds use the Canadian market to diversify their risks, which in turn reduces the costs to US customers.

Approx. 25% of Canadian exports are oil and gas. The USA transforms those raw materials into produucts of significantly higher value that it in turn sells or uses. The USA had a free rein in Canada's resource sector and in effect controls the Alberta oil sands. It has ensured that the only viable option for the sale of the oil was at below market prices. Albertans were too greedy and/or stupid to realize that they were being exploited. Had they been smarter, they would have built the refineries in Canada and sold the high value finished products. The foreign dominated industry has made sure that Canada doesn't refine all of its oil and gas. At some point, the wheels are going to turn and Canadians will take back their oil, gas and mineral sector. It worked for hydro electricity. Nothing stops the federal government from tariffing energy exports or even blocking its export.

The auto industry deficit Trump goes on about is actually a surplus in favour of the USA. The Canadian auto sector builds its vehicles primarily with US auto parts and equipment imports.The US actually has a surplus with Canada. Canada should just cut its losses now after being screwed by the US automakers during Covid. Accept the loss of the US auto business, pivot to self sufficiency using Asian and European suppliers and markets. It may result in fewer options, but it's not like the US products were of superior quality. There is enough domestic demand in Canada to support an auto manufacturer. No big loss if Stellantis is gone for good, and if GM or Ford joins them. Toyota and Honda will still be there. The free trade agreement with South Korea is working. Europe is willing to send more vehicles. The agreement with Germay to build submarines has demonstrated what can be done with European partners that will transfer technology and create jobs.

The export of critical minerals is worth billions. Other markets want them. The US can find new suppliers.

The USA can do without the Canadian electricity. Cut it off on December 1 to upgrade transmission lines.

No more exports of toilet paper.

Lots more can be done. This isn't Iran, or spineless Starmer. Canada has low cost energy, clean water, lots of food and lots of good will. It can wait for the end of the Trump administration, which should start with the shellacking that will occur in November.
